Car-based urban transport system and the uncontrolled development of the car traffic is a violation to the basic needs of human beings. At present, most large and medium cities have a high level of urbanization in our country, but in the process of rapid urbanization, urban transportation emphasizes on the motorized-oriented development, which results in the neglecting of the important regulatory role of non-motorized transport system, The effects to urban ecological environment and pedestrian environment brought by car traffic cannot be ignored, which mainly reflects in three aspects: the imbalance of urban ecological environment——the shortage and the waste of energy, serious air pollution and global warming; shortage and lack of urban cultural environment——urban traffic congestion, shortage and lack of public space, and the reduction of public activities; decline in health status of urban residents——lack of exercise, poor immunity, easily fatigue, nervousness, anxiety, depression, lack of public relations, public crisis of confidence and so on. These"urban disease"are the results of a lack of correct or positive health guidance from urban transport to urban environment and residents.Walking is an integral part of urban traffic, is considered as the most environmentally friendly and the healthiest way to travel, in a sense of speaking, no matter which way to choose, it would be start from and end with walking. The situation of pedestrian environment is a direct impact on the pedestrian activities and the normal functioning of urban transportation. Under the influence of the global development of healthy city and the concept of pedestrianalization, strengthening the health orientation of urban pedestrian environment in China is a necessity of sustainable development and criteria of urban civilization and the level of livable. The premise and the goal of this paper is to improve the health orientation of pedestrian environment, propose renewal recommendations to the status quo of pedestrian environment, analyze and apply western mature theory, and compare with and learn from the successful experience in the process of pedestrianalization in cities of Europe and the U.S and other developed countries. The incentives of unhealthy urban pedestrian environment are the imbalance of urban transport and the defects of walking system; the key point of renewal is to put focus on people-oriented and the necessary development of slow traffic instead of car-oriented in urban transport planning. Through the methodology of illustration and comparison, in principles of guiding urban residents to physical and mental health as well as public relation health, propose urban pedestrian environment renewal strategies, including the related policy and implementation, public transport-oriented development, the accessibility and safety of pedestrian environment, functional diversity of environment and spatial definition, and environmental facilities and urban landscape features. These proposals are for cities in China to achieve healthy and sustainable construction of pedestrian environment, at the mean time, hoping this article could provide ideas for related types of urban research.
