| The increasing demand for a healthy lifestyle among the Chinese people creates a distinct contradiction with the relatively outdated built environment in many old communities.Community renewal,as a key component of urban renewal,is currently going through a critical transition phase. With the introduction of "Healthy China" strategy and the gradual integration of the national "big health" concept into public health awareness, there is greater emphasis on residents’ social and health needs.Social health, which is based on physical and mental well-being,not only promotes individual health but also enhances the positive atmosphere of society. As the most basic daily activity space unit for urban residents and the location where residents’ social interactions occur most frequently, the community plays a crucial role in promoting social health. However, previous research has predominantly focused on material spaces rather than considering residents’ health needs from a multidimensional perspective. As a large international city that belongs to the super-first-tier in China,Shanghai faces numerous problems related to its old communities, including dilapidated community environments, neglect of residents’ social health needs, and conflicts of interest among different groups in the community. This study investigates how the built environment affects residents’ social health, utilizing literature review, questionnaire survey, quantitative analysis, and case analysis methods. And this study focuses on the communities under the jurisdiction of Youyi Road Street in Baoshan District,Shanghai.Firstly, the research clarifies the development of community renewal related to social health both domestically and internationally, examines the relationship between the built environment, social interaction behavior, and social health, analyzes the achievements and shortcomings of current theoretical research, and establishes a theoretical foundation.A four-indicator system, mainly consisting of social cohesion, place attachment, social integration, and public participation willingness,is constructed to judge residents’ social health. The study analyzes four practical cases of community renewal that promote social health and summarizes their experiences.Secondly, the study identifies the spatial scope of the research, constructs a quantitative evaluation index system for the built environment, personal factors, social interaction behavior, and social health of the community, collects valid data, and compares and analyzes communities with different attributes such as good and poor built environments. The study found that residents’ individual conditions, social interaction willingness, neighbor satisfaction, and social health level are higher in communities with better-built environments than those with poorer ones.Through Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis, the study quantitatively analyzed the data and found that a good built environment has a positive effect on residents’ social health, whereas excessively large community scale, numerous buildings, and houses inhibit residents’ social health.Based on the research results, the study summarizes and generalizes community renewal strategies, proposes update principles, and puts forward targeted renewal strategies for two types of communities. Finally, representative communities from the survey were selected for specific optimization designs to demonstrate the feasibility and operability of the overall strategy and specific optimization methods. |
