Bridge has brought the people great convenience in terms of the traffic environment as a road transport link, but it is undoubtedly an obstacle for ships'safe navigation. With China's rapid development in economic construction and technology, the number of bridges across the rivers is increasing and meanwhile the ships' tonnage is getting much larger and their speed is also getting faster in different levels of channel, as a result the traffic accidents of ship-bridge collision will happen inevitably. The accidents'increase in frequency causes damages to both the ship and bridge though not each accident may lead to the collapse of bridge and the deaths of people. In fact it brings damages to bridge's structures and influences bridge's service life, safety and seismic capacity after each collision, so there is a very important theoretical and practical significance to study the collision between ships and bridges either in terms of safety and economy or in terms of environmental protection. If the problem of collision is solved, it is beneficial to channel's safety and smoothness and can prevent rivers and coastal waters from being polluted and increase the economic benefits of water shipping; it is conducive to railway, highway and other road traffic's safety and smoothness and can reduce the construction cost of bridge and fender facilities on the piers. In conclusion, after the problem being solved it will provide the basis for regulating the speed limit and operation procedures of the ships driving in channels, the basis for the design and construction of bridge and fender facilities and the basis for dealing with maritime disputes. This dissertation aims to provide a reference for analyzing the increasing numbers of ship-bridge collision accidents that happened in the channels at all levels and it takes an accident as the background which was about a certain bridge across the river being collided by two ships in East Hubei Province. Firstly the impact force corresponding to reality is determined, then the effects of ship collisions on the bridge is simulated under different conditions by Finite Element software. Each chapter is organized as follows in this dissertation:(1) In the first chapter, several accidents of ship-bridge collision typical both at home and abroad are reviewed and their causes are analyzed firstly, then the situation of research on ship-bridge collision problem is introduced.(2) In the second chapter, the research situation of theories on ship-bridge collision is summarized and several classic theories are introduced.(3) In the third chapter, there is an overview on the situation of research into impact force both at home and abroad and some practical formulas for calculating impact force are mentioned.(4) The fourth chapter is the most important one in the dissertation. Firstly the project profile of the bridge across a river in East Hubei Province is introduced and all the circumstances are described under which the bridge was collided by two ships; secondly the impact force corresponding to reality is determined; lastly stress and strain effects on the bridge are simulated through Midas/Civil Software.(5) In the last chapter, the main results of the whole dissertation are summarized and the prospect of further research orientation in the future is given.
