Taohuayuan Airport is located in Doumuhu town of Dingcheng district in Changde city of Hunan Province, about 12.2km away from the urban area. In order to prevent birdstrike, a survey of avian species diversity was conducted at Taohuayuan Airport of Hunan Province from May 2008 to January 2010, aiming to learn activity rhythms and spatial distribution of birds at Taohuayuan Airport and then establishing effective prevention and treatment to prevent birdstrike.The study shows that there were 91 bird species observed, belonging to 28 families and 13 orders. Among them, there were 39,25,25 and 2 bird species respectively belonging to the resident birds, the summer breeders, the winter migrant birds and the passage migrant birds. Classified by ecological characteristics, there were 1,23,9,4,8 and 46 bird species respectively belonging to natatores birds, wading birds, prey birds, terrestrial birds, climbing birds, songbirds; by fauna, there were 34,38 and 19 bird species respectively belonging to the oriental species, palaearctic species, widely distributed species.The Shannon-Weiner index and Pielou's evenness index of the avian community were the highest in spring and the lowest in autumn. There were the highest Shannon-Weiner index of birds in the shrub-grassland and the highest Pielou's evenness index of birds in the village habitat; both the indices of birds in the farmland were the lowest. The density of bird population had no significant difference among different seasons, and also between the shrub-grassland and the forest habitat, the farmland and the water-body habitat (P>0.05), among other habitats had significant difference (P<0.05).The activity rhythms of birds, in different seasons, were different at Taohuayuan Airport airfield. There were 14,20,35, and 14 bird species recorded, respectively belonging to the spring, summer, autumn and winter. There were recorded 199,621,679, and 508 quantities of birds in the airfield of Taohuayuan Airport. The related coefficient was 0.118 and the significance level was 0.882 between the average number of individuals in different seasons and temperature. Between the average individual number of birds and average humidity, the correlation efficient was 0.759 and the significance level 0.241.The birds usually build up a flock including 1~6 individuals in spring and autumn,1 ~5 individuals in summer and 10 or 30 individuals in winter. The Skylark usually build up a flock including 2~6 individuals. In summer, there was a flock including 2~6 individuals accounted for 36.8% of the total,5~6 individuals in autumn accounted for 37.0% of the total in taohuayuan airport airfield.On activity rhythm, foraging activity accounted for 32.79% of all activities, resting activity 20.02%, alert activity 13.49%, movement activity 20.42%, nursing activity 4.17%, tweet activity 5.63% and with others 3.47% in Taohuayuan airport airfield.For more investigation, we implemented a series of control measures, such as bird nets, gas guns, clearing snails and soil animals out from gutters, weeding, bird models, etc. The results showed that bird nets were used better in preventing the Spot-necked Dove and the Lesser Skylark in spring, The Little Egret, Black Drongo and Blackbird in summer, the Lesser Skylark and Blackbird in autumn and winter; the gas guns had a short-term effect on birds; the removal of snail and soil animals can effectively prevent waterfowl; weeds can significantly reduce the number of activities at the airfield; the test area's birds can be completely removed at least within 1 hour, after surveying on each test of bird model.
