| Earth building has a history of thousands of years in our country. The wall built of rammed earth has appeared in Shang dynasty, which was in the period of slavery society. But the shearing strength, bending strength and breaking strength of earth material is very low, thus the earth building has connatural shortage in seismic resistant capability. North Henan province is located in the earthquake belt, where earthquakes happen frequently and violently. But some earth buildings are still in perfect condition after thousands of years of wind and rain erosion and earthquakes. It proves that the requirement of seismic resistance can be fulfilled as long as the earth structure is designed reasonable and the construction measures are appropriate. Therefore, the research on the structure and construction of earth building is very meaningful for the design of modern earth building.Earth building, such as adobe building, rammed building and cave dwelling, means the building built of undisturbed soil which is not roasted but simply processed. The cave dwelling is an architectural type with the most local culture characteristics, and It's most common in the west Henan province. Adobe is the most important earth material in the North Henan Province (include Xinxiang, Anyang, Jiaozuo, Hebi, Jiyuan). The rammed building is still reserved in the Wangwu Street in Jiyuan and it's still in use today. This article explains the development of earth building in the North Henan Province. The excellent performance of earth building is better illustrated by the test data based on the field survey and site observation on old raw soil building in North Henan Province. This article also gives some introduction to the historical background and pattern arrangement of traditional earth building. It emphasizes on the analysis and comprehensive evaluation of the structure system and construction of earth building. This article preliminarily drafts the standards for construction of earth building and detailing requirements, which can support some guidance for the design and construction of modern earth building. |
