There are many contradictions and conflicts since the role of the edge space is the combination of public space and regional restriction. To conciliate the conflict, it should take the "permeation" function of the edge space into consideration as important as "isolation". Although the district boundaries for Wuhan's residential is promoting gradually, it still exists so many defects in the design: less attention and more indifference between the city and its communities, fragmentation of the environmental image and the whole structure of the area. Therefore, it is necessary to take the edge space into account in the overall design. In this context, this paper confirms the scope of the study about the edge space firstly, illustrates the transition of "close and open" in residential area, then does the basic research about the boundary element, the function and the effect. We will present the effect of the edge space on the function, artistic quality, cultural feature, security and ecological function. Secondly, combine the edge space with different types of field, such as the entrance space, the corner in community, the distance between buildings and so on, to give a summarization about the defect and advantage. After that, present the design strategy which combines the principle of integrity, penetrability and multi-targets aiming at the problems which are mentioned above. Finally, on the basis of assessing the full text, we bring forward the new research in the design of edge space, the method to improve the design and management with multi-domain cooperation, and the way to the target of specious isolation. We use lots of photos and drawings to do the research above, and wish to make contribution to the study of improving the design for edge space.
