How The Zen Buddhism Culture Affects Modern Furniture Design

Once Buddhism was introduced to our country from India after A. D. 67, it merged the achievement of three great thoughts which are Confucianism and Taoism and Buddhist, then formed the Zen Buddhism culture. Zen Buddhism culture influences people' s thought deeply in the history of thought, culture and design. Moreover it has special significance and attracts the concerns and study of numerous scholars all the time.It is a noticeable topic that how to describe the broad and profound Zen Buddhism and the mental realm of the scholar beautifully in furniture design, and to build out an artistic world which unifies the Buddhist and art in the 20th century of the world.Firstly this text looked for the relation between Zen Buddhism culture and furniture , in the view of the original development course of Zen Buddhism culture. The research of key elements , such as characteristic , values , materialization form of Zen Buddhism culture , etc., has proved that Zen Buddhism culture influences furniture design. The method of instance analysis was used to analyze a large number of concrete instances in this study .The study showed that Zen Buddhism culture had already permeated into the theory and practice of the modern furniture design , and exerted a quite far-reaching influence to the application of key element of modern furniture design. The comparative analysis method used several main respects of modern furniture, such as design idea , plastic arts , aesthetic standards, etc. And several conclusions were obtained and the main content was shown as followings:(1) " Green design ", " brief doctrine ", and " naturalism " are theidea of modern furniture design.
