The research of land use / land cover change (LUCC) has become one of the frontiers of modern geography as it not only plays an important role in global environmental change, but also has an important significance in sustainable development and management in a region. Analyzing space-time changes rules in land use understanding of the change course and mechanism of land use. Adjusting the economic activity of human society, impelling the using of land rationally, and keeping the pertinence, validity of the national macroscopically strategic policy could guarantee sustainable utilization of land resource.Jintai District and Weibin District in Baoji City are of great importance in their geographical location. Baoji, a city in northern China, is a transportation hub with rail connections to northwestern and southwestern China. It is also one of transportation hubs along the Asia-Europe Continental Bridge, together with Zhengzhou in central China and Xuzhou in eastern China. It plays a role of bridging the east and the west, and connecting the north and the south of the country in the national economic system. It is also situated at the frontier of Western Development. All these geological merits make Baoji City develop fast, with a speed remaining above the national average level for 5 years. The subject region in the paper is the suburban area, where the land use change has been significant, hence, typical in China.After three years of research and exploration, with the use of the 3S technology and the employment of satellite TM Image, the LUCC change and its driving factors of the subject region are analyzed, and the findings are:(1) With the use of the 3-stages remote sensing image, and the use of the 3S technology, the land use /land cover change information of the subject region is collected. The research finds that the overall tendency and basic characteristics of the change are: the cultivated land decreases dramatically; garden land increases dramatically; residential area and industrial area grows with a relatively high speed; forestry area shows a tendency of decrease; unused land area shows a tendency of increase; waters area changes little. The environment of the subject region improves to a certain degree, and land utilization manner gets to be rational and in the direction of sustainable development.(2) With mathematical model, the subject region's land use change in amount, structure and extent are analyzed.
