Many coastal and offshore engineering applications require detailed knowledge of wave conditions at specific locations.Usually,such information is not available,due to incomplete observational records.In such cases,predictions of the wave conditions by numerical models become a popular tool,as they may provide the good estimate of the environmental conditions at a location for given wind fields.The method of numerical simulation is used in this paper,and wind-wave interaction,white capping dissipation,wave breaking,bottom friction and nonlinear wave-wave interaction are fully considered,a international advanced third-generation wave model,SWAN(acronym for Simulating WAve Nearshore),is adopted to simulate the wave fields of Taiwan Strait.First,the numerical experimentation scheme is designed to study varying depth and tidal current's effects on the wave fields.Depth-induced dissipation,current field and water level have great important effects to the wave fields in the nearshore,all these effects can be reflected in the numerical tests of this paper within reason.Second,we use SWAN model to simulate the wave fields by the wind of Taiwan Strait,and the results show good compared to the results by the method of Wilson.Finally, a simulative study is made to the process of typhoon waves in Taiwan Strait for the 0604 Typhoon Bilis,0601 Typhoon Chanchu and 0605 Typhoon Kaemi.By using the simulative typhoon wind fields we drive the SWAN model and the physical process like as wind-wave interaction,white capping dissipation,wave breaking,bottom friction and nonlinear wave-wave interaction are fully considered.The main results are:The wave directions and the distribution of significant wave heights are different respectively,when the center of typhoon is in the different position;The significant wave heights in the region near the center of typhoon are lower than the region which around the center of typhoon,the propagation directions of typhoon waves have good correlation with the wind directions.Then we can get a good knowledge of the distribution character of typhoon waves of the whole Taiwan Strait,which can provide a good reference for modeling...
