With the great development of computer and network technology, it takes the broad promising WebGIS technology into our eyes. Through the Internet platform, WebGIS technology has brought the traditional GIS system a greater development, made it no longer a tool for a few professional GIS researchers, and become a popular and promotion of simple technology. In this paper, we will take Southwest University as an example, design a WebGIS digital campus system and implement it at last.We can develop a WebGIS system through the means of the Internet technology, computer technology and the communication network technology and also we can carry on a comprehensive digital and information for the scientific research, teaching, daily management and life service for the whole school. In this way, we have our school not only a campus, but also a large digital virtual university in the society.WebGIS digital campus is a specific application in the WebGIS field. In the first, this paper discusses the WebGIS technology and development of the present situation at home and abroad, introduces principle and characteristics of the J2EE technology, Struts framework, Hibernate framework and Spring framework, ArcSDE and database technology and WebGIS technology. And then it introduces the design purpose and principle, general structure, technical route, function module and spatial database design of Southwest University based on J2EE WebGIS digital campus system. Finally, this paper summarizes the work, innovations and inadequate.The Southwest University digital campus system based on J2EE WebGIS has the following advantages:(1) This is a modular, multi-layers, distributed WebGIS system, which is extensible, portable and reliable.(2) It does not need to be installed any plugins or professional GIS software in the client browser. We can simple and inexpensive access the data in the system.(3) This system makes full use of the network resources and it sends the basic and global operation to the server, lets the client script language handle the simple tasks. It is flexible and efficient way to realize the business logic in the server and client distribution.(4) We can inquire the teaching buildings, colleges, dormitories, canteens, parks, roads, teachers and students'informations and other resources through the intuitive WebGIS. It is very convenient to teachers and students and other people who are unfamiliar with the campus environment.
