The Typo-morphology Approach To The Conservation And Regeneration Of The Xiaoxihu Historical Area,Nanjing

The Da Youfangxiang historical area,also known as Xiaoxihu,is one of the few residential districts in the old city of Nanjing that has preserved the traditional pattern since Ming and Qing Dynasties.However,its cultural relics are not enough to enter the list of “historic conservation area”.Such areas are more or less preserved in many Chinese cities,most of which are close to the city center with good locations,but often in bad qualities of infrastructure,buildings and living mode.Conservation and regeneration mean the protection of historical characteristic,the renovation of the shantytown and based on those,the stimulation of vitality.Starting from the specific problems encountered in the Xiaoxihu case,this dissertation explores the localized innovation of the typo-morphological approach in the process of conservation and regeneration of historical areas on three levels of interpretation,design and practice,and then applies the new method to the Xiaoxihu case to examine its applicability and practicality.The Method construction and case experiment are intertwined and promoted together.The main content of the dissertation consists of 4 following aspects:(1)The presentation and comparison of the historical resources and the current living environment of the Xiaoxihu area,and the relevance of various problems encountered in the process of research and practice with the typo-morphological approach.(2)The presentation and analysis of the western theory and method,and the problems of its direct application to the interpretation and design of the historical area of Nanjing.(3)Propose a localized interpretation method by optimizing the interpretation tools and adjusting the research hierarchy,and explore the small-scale and gradual planning and architectural design strategies from both top-down and bottom-up aspects based on the typo-morphological characters of the Xiaoxihu area.(4)The application of the new interpretation method and design strategy in the practice of Xiaoxihu project for further adjustment and supplement,and propose matching suggestions for working mechanisms and policy innovation.The main contributions of this thesis include: raising awareness of the values of historical areas,not only protecting the spatial characteristics but also improving the living quality;expanding the cognitive and interpretation methods suitable for the historical areas of Nanjing,and analyzing the evolution and motivation of material space and life mode;develop the planning and design strategy combined top-down government's control and bottom-up residents' willingness;method research and practice exploration are carried out simultaneously to complete method system from research to design and practice.
