Abstract/Summary:
As an interdisciplinary research field,urban morphology is confronted with new situations in the contemporary era.Traditional experience and cognition often fails when facing the emerging large-scale,collage urban form.The comprehensive upgrading of science and technology and its infiltrating into urban research,at the same time,empower this long-existing field.After the early Quantitative Revolution and Digital Integration,urban morphology is moving towards New Urban Science,where the performance of urban model is significantly enhanced,the domain knowledge is iteratively growing,and the tools tends to be the background.Typomorphology,a classic research method in urban morphology,has shown much limitation in scope,object,classification process,and efficiency contemporarily.Intervening data science method into typo-morphology to form an interdisciplinary approach,is the trend of the times as it has already emerged.In this thesis,we define it as digital methods for analyzing contemporary urban form based of Modeling Typomorphology(MT).Based on the procedure of Theoretical Discrimination-Technical Methods-Empirical Research,this thesis proposes a detailed study on the Modeling Typomorphology.In Theoretical Discrimination,the basic principal of MT is elaborated.Based on reviewing existing relevant knowledge,the framework of MT is also established.In Technical Methods,a series of data scientific techniques are integrated into eight modules,corresponding to the four digital steps along the process of MT:Object Definition,Feature Extraction,Pattern Division,and Type Interpretation.In Empirical Research,the Old City of Nanjing(OCN)is selected as the study area,while blocks,streets,and intersections are chosen as morphological elements.Composition,distribution and succession of OCN is investigated at two time slices,namely 2005 and 2020.Digital Typo-morphology Map of OCN could be drawn through our research.Through the Map,seven block types,twelve street types,and eight intersection types are discovered in OCN,constituting the typology set of building group scale.Through the Map,the morphological structure of OCN could be abstracted based on multi-aspect superposition.Through the Map,the 15-year progressive urban renewal process of OCN could be understood better.The main innovation of this thesis is concluded as follows.First,in terms of perspective,it builds an interdisciplinary integration between urban morphology and data science.It breaks the boundary between disciplines,to learn,refine,and transform quantities of data science techniques,while holding the main clues of urban morphology.The theoretical base of MT is specifically elaborated through basic principal,existing knowledge and core framework.Second,in terms of methods,it integrates a series of data science techniques in order to establish digital method group of MT.The integration is framed with the hierarchy of Step – Module –Technique,making a comprehensive contribution to existing method.The proposed Box Model,Cylinder Model,especially enhances the refinement of amorphous element measurement,such as streets and intersections.Third,in terms of content,it explores the historical succession of contemporary large-scale three-dimensional urban form.The block form,street form,and intersection form of OCN,2005-2020 is modeled,generating the Digital Typo-morphology Map,through which the composition,distribution and succession of large-scale urban form could be understood.
