Terraced Household In Kashgar,Xinjiang:on The Construction Pattern And Modern Adaptability

Sited atop an earthen platform,approximately 20m high and 400 meters wide in the historic city of Kashgar,Xinjiang Province,terraced household has formed a settlement with distinctive Western Regions touch of which the generation and evolvement was situated stretched urban land.While the recent years witnessed modern urban development,it also brought about serious problems for the settlement to face including environment,both natural and social,worsening,landscape fragmentation,regional and ethnical character diminishing,historic context inconsistency and local population emigration.This dissertation,therefore,aimedat a scrutiny into and analysis of,contextualized in the historic city of Kashgar in terms of its historical development and evolvement,the rich experience gathered through the construction of these platformed houses and their settlement.Grounded on historical sources and present situation while assisted by data gathering and processing methods such as measured drawing and field-survey,full and detailed inspection,documentation and investigation was accomplished for 454 standing platformed houses.Informed by information thus obtained the study examined the formation reason of the houses and their settlement find that the settlement acquired its cohesive,low-rise,high-density and concentrated cluster formation as regard layout and spatial configuration and that such acquisition happened in an arid oasis mountain-surrounded,river-bound and desert-locked with multi-ethnical,multi-religious and multicultural setting.Moreover,qualitative and quantitalive investigation was carried out into the elements and structure of the houses and the settlement,of which the courtyard-centered way of cellular reproduction was shed light on,with 3 prototypes of constructive cell and 14 modes of fundamental spatial organization concluded.Moreover,point the study illuminated the climate adaptive modes and 5 regional construction rules of the houses and their settlement,for which expressive strategies for protection and renovation of modern adaptability was proposed.The study thus not only aims to see the acadmic discourse on Chinese minority terraced household enriched,but also for the theoretic construction of the preservation and revitalization of traditional urban settlement coined,as well as for the stabalized and harmonized development of modern cities inhabited by multi-ethnical groups relevance and demonstration presented.
