Abstract/Summary:
This descriptive case study explored the internal communication and the impact of cultural factors among those involved with enrollment management at one small, private Christian university in the Midwest. Based on the content of 49 interviews with faculty, staff and administration involved with enrollment management, the study found positive communication and collaboration within university departments, significant frustrations with downward communication, and noticeable compartmentalization and lack of collaboration and communication between departments. The organizational culture theory (Pacanowsky & O'Donnell-Trujillo, 1982; Quinn & Rohrbaugh, 1983; Shein, 1985) was supported and enhanced indicating that two of the four cultures can co-exist in an organization, creating potentially more dynamic interaction and more compartmentalization and disconnect, all of which have an effect on enrollment management. The study offers insight for many universities regarding the importance of enrollment management structures and cultures that foster open communication and collaboration among all parties involved with enrollment management.
