As teams become more common in the workplace, one of the necessary issues that must be addressed is the staffing and composition of teams. This research investigates team staffing and composition issues using specialized military teams. A theoretical framework is developed that allows the classification of individual knowledges, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAO) based on their relationship with teamwork and taskwork aspects of performance as well as their proximity with the performance construct. This framework is examined using a set of archival predictors gathered during the selection process in place for these teams. Additionally, a variety of composition models are discussed and utilized within this research. The results support the use of a variety of composition models beyond a standard mean aggregation approach. Several of the KSAOs were predictive of team performance in this context. It is concluded that the a multilevel approach to team selection is warranted and likely to be useful in this military context. |
