Stigma of mental health and resistance toward Western mental health treatment or services in the Lahu community

Abstract/Summary:
This study inquired about Lahu community members' knowledge, experience, or exposure to mental health treatment or services, as well as their beliefs about mental health treatment or services for their community. A phenomenological design was used. Five Lahu individuals over the age of 18 were in this study. The materials utilized in this study consisted of an English version and Lahu version of the demographic questionnaire and the phenomenological question designed to elicit their experience. The results of this research study concluded that there were barriers to seeking mental health services in the Lahu community. Members reported their preference for seeking support or assistance with emotional needs from family or friends.
