Objective: To analyze the status and influential factors of sleep quality and mental of the elderly in community of Yanji City and to improve the sleep quality and mental health of the elderly. Methods: 1 000 elderly age 60 years old or more were investigated with questionnaire in Yanji City, under strict quality control system, they were interviewed with questionnaire to look into their sleep habits and the status of mental health as well as its related factor. Comparative study on sleep quality, lifestyle and mental health of the elderly in the Korean and Han nationality of Yanji City. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), The self-esteem Scale (SES) et al were evaluated by train interviewers. T-test, ANOVAs, Chi-Square test, Logistic regression analysis and Stepwise regression analysis were performed. Results: (1) The elderly people in Yanji City usually went to bed around 9:00 pm and got up around 4:30 am. their sleep duration was about 7 hours. (2) The mean score of the health lifestyles in the Korean was higher than that Han nationality, the difference was significant (P<0.01). (3) The PSQI score of the female was lower than that of the male, the difference was significant (P<0.01), Which suggested that the female had poorer sleep quality than the male. About 12.8 percent of the elderly in community of Yanji City had the problems of sleep. (4) The results from analysis indicated that the sleep quality of elder was related with going to toilet in midnight, insomnia, coughing and snoring, sleep latency, et al. (5) The multiple Logistic regression analysis indicated that the sleep quality was related with 7-8 hours sleep time per day, being a woman, the Korean nationality, satisfaction with economic status, family history of mental disorders, old age, marriage and health physical status. (6) There were 3 percent the elderly had feeling of depressed in the interviewers. The mean score of SDS was significant difference between the Korean and Han nationality in Yanji City, and self-rating Depression of the male was better than the old female. (7) The mean score of SES was no significant difference between the Korean and Han nationality in Yanji City. The results of SES indicated that the self-esteem status of the elderly was at a high level.
