Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the convergent validity of the Substance Use/Abuse Problem Area (SUAPA) of the Problem Oriented Screening Instrument for Teenagers (POSIT) and the Alcohol/Drug Problem Acknowledgement (ACK) supplementary scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent (MMPI-A). Paper-and-pencil versions of the SUAPA and ACK were administered to 274 male and female students between the ages of 13 and 19 adjudicated to a state-operated secure care juvenile facility. The primary objective of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the SUAPA. The SUAPA was positively correlated with the ACK for measuring the propensity of alcohol and/or drug use among adolescents in secure care facilities. Implications for counselors and recommendations are provided. Keywords: Screening, Assessment, Substance Use, Juveniles, Secure Care...
