According to historicism methodology, archival management should take archival essential characteristic as its premise, which is the property of a true record maintenance by original order. The true record property and original order of archive reflects social process orderly and provide a main foundation for people to learn, construct and inherit historical memory roundly, entirely and accurately. As a result, the relation between archive resources is primarily a reflection of one social practice and its development process. At present, the archive management system is still based on fonds as management unit. This is very useful in view of that the social practice activities and processes won't beyond the responsibility of a certain archive department, and such a fonds archive can fully and completely inherits the whole memory of one social practice activity. However, given the fact that some social practice activities are complex and have lots of participants, each fonds archive can only record part of the historical situation about one social practice activity. On this occasion,we need to break through. In order to construct a full and true historical memory,we can center on one social practice activity and its development process which means that we collect, organize and preserve relative archive information as a special theme. But this model of archive management is limited by current archive management system, and has few operability in practice.Luckily, new information technologies provide a opportunity to break through.Constructing an archival resource database in special collections to manage all the archival resource of one social practice activity is an effective way to meet users' needs. Therefore, several questions need to be answered:Firstly, what is archival special collections and the concepts derived from it such as thematic archival resource and thematic archival resource database? What are the relationships between the concepts? What features do they have and what demand do the features result in?What are the contradictions between users' demand and satisfaction on archive resources in special collections and how can thematic archival resource database solve this problem? All these explain the necessity of the construction of thematic archival resource database.Secondly, does thematic archival resource database construction have any feasibility?Up to now, there is not any empirical research or practice experience in centralized management of archival resource. So,is there any information technologies which can contribute to the goal of archival resource database in special collections?Thirdly, how can we realize archival resource database in special collections? At this point of view, how to plan the construction process and contents in each stage, what functions are needed, and the assurance of collaboration between different subjects of archival resource database construction in special collections are all important.Centering on the questions above, this paper demonstrates them in ten chapters:Chapter 1:Introduction.Starting with the research background, this part demonstrated the overview of relative work at home and abroad. In addition, the main contents, methods, ideas and meanings of this research have been demonstrated as well.Chapter 2:Discrimination and definition of relative concepts. This chapter states the definition and discrimination of relative concepts such as "archival special collections","archival resources in special collections","archival resources database in special collections" and "archival resources database construction in special collections" in turn. And then, the key contents of archival resources database construction in special collections has been clarified.Chapter 3:The necessity of thematic archival resource database construction. In this chapter, users' needs of archival resources in special collections and the contradictions of the satisfactions of needs were first demonstrated. And then this chapter pointed out that constructing archival resources database in special collections was the necessary way to solve the problem of the contradiction between the supplies and needs of archival special collections.Chapter 4:The theoretical feasibility of archival resource database construction in special collections. The theoretical basis contains the principle of provenance, social memory theory and information resource integration. And these theories provide methodology introduction of archival resources database construction in special collections as well.Chapter 5:The practical feasibility of archival resource database construction in special collections. On the one hand, this section analyzed and summarized the experience of archival resource database construction in special collections at home and abroad in order to support the feasibility of practice. On the other hand, current information resource integration technologies provide the opportunity to realize archival resource database.Chapter 6:The construction process plans of archival resource database in special collections.Based on the steps of constructing ordinary information management system and the theory of quality construction, the whole process is divided into five phrases:initial stage of preparation, earlier stage of planning, middle stage of construction, later stage of dissemination and diffusion, and quality maintenance.Chapter 7:The overall architecture design of thematic archival resource database.According to the experience of general information system design, chapter 7 demonstrated the principles and goals of the overall architecture design. And then, the functions and properties of thematic archival resource database were put forward on the basis of user demands. At last, functional modules of the system platform were designed.Chapter 8:The collaborative mechanism of thematic archival resource database.Based on the analysis of the contents which needed to be collaborated and constructivism methodology, this paper constructed a whole collaborative mechanism containing management, resource, technology and benefit to guarantee the success of database construction and the co-construction and sharing of resource.Chapter 9:Analysis of empirical case.Chapter 9 took the archival resource database of the South China Sea during the Republic of China construction in special collections as an example.Since the sample has an obvious feature of archival special collections in use and service, its necessity, feasibility and realization process can well explain the scientificalness of the theories and methods proposed above to construct a archival resource database in special collections.Chapter 10:Conclusion and expectation. This part summarized the whole research and preliminary forecasted the next research. This research proposed the necessity and feasibility of thematic archival construction from the point that archival resources in special collections have an important value and they could meet social demands. And then, guided by the principle of historism, this paper constructed a theoretical basis containing the principle of provenance, fonds theory and social memory theory, information integration, quality controlling, synergetics and constructivism.Besides, based on existing empirical cases and theories about information system platform construction, this paper put forward a general method system to guide the construction of archival resource database in special collections. With the methods, this paper proposed a preliminary plan about construction procedures, platform scheme and collaborative mechanism. In the end,by analyzing the construction of archival resource database of the South China Sea during the Republic of China construction in special collections, the sciencificalness of the theories and method systems has been verified.
