Understanding The Calling Of Young Talent In Science And Technology

In the new round of international competition,China still has a long way to go in science and technology.Breakthroughs needs to be made continuously in basic scientific research and key core technologies,innovative impetus further stimulated,and the spirit of scientists reinterpreted.However,with the context of the impetuous atmosphere and utilitarianism in the society,China’s scientific and technological circle has also shown some undesirable tendencies such as eager for quick success and instant benefits,academic misconduct,etc.,which not only seriously affected our international reputation of science and technology,but also destroyed the good ecology of science and technology innovation.Many scholars have discussed the strategies for improving scientific and technological evaluation and research awards from policy and management.However,the mere stimulation of their innovation from extermal motivation can seldom get a satisfactory result,especially in those fields that need long-term hard work,which can be seen from the gap between China and developed countries in frontier science and technology.How to release the vitality of scientific and technological workers and stimulate their motivation for innovation has become an important problem that all countries must face when dealing with the fierce competition in science and technology.Hopefully,calling can offer a new perspective in motivating those talent in science and technology.In recent years,the concept of calling has been widely applied in fields like psychology and management to discuss the importance of sense of meaning and altruistic contribution in individual career development and self-realization.It can be seen that this calling motivation,which regards a certain occupation as their calling,is of significance to stimulate the innovation vitality of young talent in science and technology(YTST).Now,some scholars have already realized the value of the calling,but it is a pity that no studies attempt to solve the problems of scientific and technological innovation and carry forward the spirit of scientists in China from the calling of YTST.The purpose of this study is to try to construct a model of the development of calling of YTST with grounded theory.The study mainly includes the following aspects:First,it briefly analyzes the current situation and trend of the research on callingAt first,the calling of these young talent is introduced with the problems of innovation culture and motivation in the new era.Then,the studies of calling are briefly reviewed,some related concepts are defined or differentiated and research methods are given.Second,the theory and practice of calling have been comprehensively explored.The evolution of the concept of calling,the difference in the connotation of calling,and the way to seek a calling is successively reviewed.Also,the value and enlightenment of the existing calling-related models are briefly introduced.Thirdly,it attempts to review the relevant historical trends of the calling of YTST.The article explores the historical thoughts of the calling of these young talent in science and technology,which is closely related to academic research.Finally,the article explains Fichte and Weber’s interpretations of calling in more detail,and Merton’s "the ethos of science",which provides philosophical reflection and enlightenment for the study of calling in future.Fourth,it systematically explains the cognitive characteristics of calling in Chinese culture.The concept of calling has cross-cultural differences,and it is also difficult to define.From the perspective of cognitive style and with the help of metaphor analysis,the article explores the cognitive characteristics of calling in collectivism culture in China.Fifthly,the model of the development of the calling of YTST has been constructed.The article employs grounded theory to analyze the perception,development and function of their calling of YTST,and finally constructs a model of their calling from the perspective of cognition,motivation,emotion and choice,which includes the perception of a calling,the driving of calling,the spirituality of a calling and the awakening of a calling.Finally,it reinterprets the calling of YTST philosophically.According to the main findings of the model construction,the article carries out philosophical rethinking on the calling from culture,research self-efficacy and ethics norms respectively.The article also puts forward some future studies of calling,especially in interpretation of calling in Chinese culture and the cultivation of YTST from the perspective of calling.
