A Comparative Study Of Chinese Directional Words And Their Thai Equivalents

The Chinese and Thai all have directional words,these directional words have the same or similar characteristics,semantic and syntax very much.Meanwhile,there are some differences between them,too.The purpose of this research was to examine the Chinese directional words in four sets of extremely high frequency usage;"shang/xia," "zuo/you," "li/wai" and "qian/hou." A comparative study was also conducted to compare the directional words in their corresponding Thai words that have the same or similar meaning.Then,a comparative study of Chinese and Thai directional words in four sets was study in the environment it appeared in different situations leading to the classification and discussion of its relative semantic and syntax.This thesis were presented in six main parts.The main contents of the paper are as follows.The first chapter included introduction that contained the topic selection rationale,content and scope,related research findings,framework and method of study.The second chapter which included the analysis and discussion of the similarities and differences in semantic and syntax characteristics of the targeting Chinese "shang/xia" and Thai of directional words.The third chapter which included the analysis and discussion of the similarities and differences in semantic and syntax characteristics of the targeting Chinese "zuo/you" and Thai of directional words.The fourth chapter which included the analysis and discussion of the similarities and differences in semantic and syntax characteristics of the targeting Chinese "li/wai" and Thai of directional words.The fifth chapter which included the analysis and discussion of the similarities and differences in semantic and syntax characteristics of the targeting Chinese "qian/hou" and Thai of directional words.The sixth chapter is the errors in Chinese writings made by Thai learners,discusses the main causes of error in Chinese "shang/xia" "zuo/you" "li/wai" "qian/hou" and putting forward some teaching advice.The seventh chapter was the conclusion that included the summary of the study as overall,the presentation of the innovative prominent of findings,weakness and,and recommendations for further study.The ultimate goal of conducting this study was to assist Thai students learning Chinese directional words to effectively comprehend the meaning and usage of them.Finally,their Chinese language proficiency would be improved hopefully.This study could contribute to promoting Chinese students to learn Thai directional words well in return.
