Shun Pao played a pivotal role among the Chinese press and established a reputation of neutralism in opinions in the 19th century.Since the propagation of Marxism in China, proletarian revolution has quickly spun out, which brought historic changes to China. So to speak,if there were no Marxism, there is no People's Republic of China today. So at that time how did Shun Pao report the Marxism? What is the difference of reports among different historic period? How did the political situation, the ruling government and the clerks of Shun Pao influence the news reports of Shun Pao?The answers to all these questions are the content of this thesis work. This thesis is entitled "Marxism in the view of Shun Pao",where it is focused on the reports of Shun Pao,which is an influential newspaper media with a history of seventy-eight-year long. This thesis describes the viewpoints of Marxism that reflected in the Shun Pao news during different historic periods as long as the underlying reasons for their occurrences. The reports of Marxism in Shun Pao influenced the cognation of many readers towards Marxism as well as revealed the impacts of Marxism in China at that time. This thesis follows the logic of different historical periods and can be divided into five chapters.Chapter one starts with the time when Marxism theory was introduced to China, til the Shanghai Massacre of 12 April 1927,sometimes called the April 12 Incident, initiated by Chiang Kai-shek.The logic flow is as follows.Firstly, when the Marxism theory propagated to China, how Shun Pao reported the Marxism doctrine, and the attitude of the initial Shun Pao editorial towards Marxism theory.During the United Front, how Marxism theory developed and the accumulative understanding of Marxism from the viewpoint of Shun Pao.Moreover, with the widespread of Marxism doctrine in China, the first chapter is going to discuss how the Beijing government and the right-wing of Kuomintang(KMT)suppress Marxism theory and the hidden reasons for the ban.Chapter two starts with the time of the April 12 Incident until the Mukden Incident broke out.During this period the opinions of Shun Pao was significantly influenced by the KMT government. The news of the ban of Marxism doctrine was frequently reported, and also the slander and distorted Marxism theory was published from the viewpoint of KMT.The development of Marxism theory in China has entered its darkest period. This chapter focuses on how Chiang Kai-shek suppressed Marxism theory and the role of Shun Pao in the prohibition process after KMT's victory in the Northern Expedition.Chapter three and Chapter four are the key chapters of this thesis. As the in depth of national crisis of China,"communism" had become the excuse of invasion for the Japanese imperialists.the When the Mukden Incident broke out,the Japanese invaded the Northeast China. However,Chiang Kai-shek insisted that 'to resist foreign aggression we must first get rid of the enemy within',which outraged Shun Pao and it published over-the-top rhetoric. After going through the punishment of "post ban",Shun Pao opened up another way called "free talk" for the League of Left-Wing Writer. However,in the harsh environment of political opinion, any attempt of political progress has to pay a heavy price.Shi Liangcai was murdered not long before the "free talk" was ceased. After the July 7th Incident,Shun Pao stuck to its mind although the press kept moving from Hankou to Hong Kong before finally returned to Shanghai.During the days when KMT didn't censor the newspapers,Shun Pao published many editorials supporting the War of Resistance Against Japan and Marxism theory, which was impossible in the past. However, the good times didn't last long before the broken relationship of CPC and KMT due to the political situation. The remarks of Shun Pao was not only restricted by the KMT government, but also shackled by the Japanese imperialism. After the Pacific War,Shanghai fell and Shun Pao was completely controlled by the Japanese imperialists. As a result,Shun Pao gradually declined as it was hijacked by Japanese invaders. No political progress can be observed at this period and there is no doubt that the newspaper sales fell drastically. The last chapter mainly discusses how Shun Pao reported the Marxism theory after the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan.During this period,Shun Pao was completely controlled by the KMT government, all the remarks were released from the interests of KMT.When all people were in hope of the foundation of new China in peace and democracy, the KMT government slandered Marxism to be "undemocratic" and "non-national",as well as advocating"violence" and "inopportune" or "inappropriate",and attributed all the causes of the Civil War to the Marxism theory that claimed by the Communist Party of China(CPC).When the PLA was about to enter Shanghai,Shun Pao still tried to downgrade the Marxism theory in the latest effort. However,no matter how KMT abused, slandered the Marxism,it couldn't save KMT from its political and military failure. After the PLA entered Shanghai,Shun Pao had completed its mission as a record of this historic period with the final release of the newspaper in May 23,1949.How to report Maxism in Shun Pao,it is not only lies on the current political situation or the view to Maxism of the government,it also lies on the public opinion situation of that time; The view of editorial of Shun Pao and subjective comments on Shun Pao to Maxism is relative to the attitude of the journalist and editor, and it is also interralatived with the journalist and editor's experience, educational background and political view.
