Based on culture research theory and within the historical and cultural context of the development of contemporary popular culture and mass media, this dissertation researches on entertainment carnival phenomena, in particular the TV variety show in mainland China since 1990s as research object.The dissertation proposes a concept of"entertainment carnival" and makes across subject research, which integrates the theories of culture, literature and communication. From the perspective of desire, this dissertation expounds on "entertainment carnival" for the source of theory,argument and reflection.Based on the analysis of TV variety shows,this dissertation elaborates "entertainment carnival" on basic characteristics,forms of expression,value orientation, cultural connotation and critical reflection. "Entertainment carnival" comes from the nature of human desire, and it's metaphor for life and pursuit of life, which to be considered as aesthetic form of care and emotional experience-oriented popular culture. It is affected by cultural industries, consumerism and media technology as social emotional culture. It reflects the complexity of contemporary popular culture and entertainment-oriented,desire-oriented tendency of contemporary culture. Its value exists in a certain historical and cultural context and within certain boundries. Its value should not be neglected due to the negative effect of "entertainment carnival" and limitless expansion of desire.This dissertation elaborates on "entertainment carnival" mainly from three aspects,firstly put forward the concept of "entertainment carnival" and expound on historical and cultural context, the theory basis and connotation; secondly, taking TV variety show as the objective, discuss on "entertainment carnival" from the basic characteristics, form and value orientation; finally, interpretation and critical reflection the contemporary cultural significance of "entertainment carnival".The first part mainly expounds the historical and cultural context, theoretical basis and connotation of the concept of "entertainment carnival". "Entertainment carnival"comes from the nature of human desire and it is proposed by contemporary popular culture's reality. It has certain historical and cultural basis. It is the expression of human desires through popular culture of effective creation, with a sensational effect, but also reflects the tendency of entertainment and desire of the contemporary social emotional culture; it is the inevitable development of contemporary mass culture to the carnival stage,but also the carnival of mass entertainment culture; it is a kind of care in the form of aesthetic and perceptual experience as the leading mass flow for culture. It is a social perceptual cultural industry that is constrained by consumerism and media technology."Entertainment carnival" can be understood from tree individual aspects of sensibility,psychology and culture. The second part is mainly on the study of TV variety shows from its basic characteristics, forms of expression and value orientation. The three aspects of"entertainment carnival" problems were analyzed and demonstrated,and typical case are specifically interpretated. Entertainment Carnival has the basic features of entertainment,sensibility, community, guidance pleasure. The forms of amusement, spectacle and contextualization are the values of secularization, capitalization and untypicality."Entertainment carnival" is an important cultural phenomenon of contemporary times,which can also be linked to the globalization of cultural industries. The root cause of its existence lies in the destructive effect of Carnival and the unlimited expansion of desire.The third part is mainly about the interpretation and critical reflection of the cultural significance of entertainment carnival. If "entertainment carnival" is regarded as the perceptual manifestation of desire, it reflects the reality that human desires cannot be folly satisfied and the standard of value is too utilitarian."Entertainment carnival" can not only effectively alleviate such realistic contradictions,but also express the real demands of people and show people's pursuit of ideal life. This means that "entertainment canival" has its spiritual value, but it should not be limited to the reflection of real demand, creative value-added aspects of deconstruction, happy, active creativity, it should help people obtaining spiritual freedom. Therefore, the "entertainment carnival"with positive and innovative value is the real "entertainment carnival". This article expound on the significance of "entertainment carnival" from the instinct of human nature and its value and function. It is the desires of the perceptual appearance,commercialization and consumption desire confirmed expression of desire and creative deconstruction. The problems of "Entertainment carnival" are mainly concentrated in the excessive consumption desire and value change. In order to meet the desire of consumers,"entertainment carnival" spies and challenges the bottom line of human being. This has caused the spread of vulgar entertainment or excessive entertainment, which led directly to the "entertainment carnival" value changes. It is not only a tool for profit driven capital accumulation, but also the value judgment standard utilitarian. This will lead to the distortion of alienation and emotional value,even the "entertainment carnival" on the basis of the existing value loss. As the subject of value judgment, man has not only the freedom to seek pleasure, but also the freedom of rational reflection. The value of"entertainment carnival" exists in the historical,cultural context and their limit, and this limitation is the root of the criticism of "entertainment carnival". The deconstruction of Carnival has dual attributes of creativity and destructiveness, which originates from the dual nature of desire, that is, the basic contradiction between the desire of birth and the desire to die. Therefore,we should critically reflect on the 'entertainment carnival" and its problem and point out that "entertainment carnival" with positive and innovative value is the real meaningful "entertainment carnival".This dissertation academically criticize "entertainment carnival" from the perspective of the desire. This is the in-depth analysis of the complexity of contemporary popular culture of this era, providing a theoretical basis for the production and also with the humanistic spirit of popular culture products. The aim of this dissertation is attempt to critisize and enrich the contemporary cultural theory in the specific application process. It is also to expand the horizon of contemporary aesthetic culture study and actively explore the contemporary aesthetic culture entertainment, desire tendency in theory. The purpose of this paper is to provide theoretical basis for the diversity and rationality of mass culture production and to develop a research horizon for cultural criticism theory.
