A Study On The Collation Of Wen Yuan Ying Hua In The Song Dynasty

Wen Yuan Ting Hua, began in982, is an anthology of previous works by Li Fang, Hu Meng, Xu Xuan and other seventeen civil officials, at Zhao Guangyi’s (Emperor Taizong of Song) bidding. It is a continuation of the anthology Wen Xuan, and in the articles received by this anthology, there are about one tenth of those articles selecting from the Southern and Northern Dynasties period and90per cent selecting from the Tang period, so this anthology is actually a collected works of poetry and writings came from the Tang Dynasty. After finishing to compile Wen Yuan Ying Hua, Emperor Taizong of Song read and think it is nice (Yu Hai54volumes), Zhou Bida has a good evaluation of it, and think "although it is a manuscript copy, the Collation is fine "(coming from "The Beginning of Compiling <Wen Yuan Ying Hua>"). Then the Wen Yuan Ying Hua had received four times amendments and collations. Peng Shuxia was the best person who amend and collate the book.The research method in my paper:Based on the text of Wen Yuan Ting Hua and a lot of relevant material, from the perspective of ancient Literature, and combine with emendation study, edition study, History of the Chinese language and other aspects of knowledge, and using the method of systematic research, I did some research about the collation of Wen Yuan Ying Hua.The research on the collation of Wen Yuan Ying Hua covers the following five aspects in this paper.First, in the study of Peng Shuxia, the primary emendator of Wen Yuan Ying Hua, through wide range of research, this paper discussed Peng Shuxia’s experience and some writings in which he is the major player or the co-author.Second, in the study of some literatures used to collate Wen Yuan Ying Hua, this paper discussed that Wen Yuan Ying Hua had save functions of some literatures came from the Tang Dynasty and the earlier, and listed some literature works of Tang Dynasty, that were survived when Wen Yuan Ying Hua had been collated and then were missing.Third, in the study of the method of collating Wen Yuan Ying Hua, there are three methods in collating Wen Yuan Ying Hua. The first one is the mechanical, old-fashioned way to collate Wen Yuan Ying Hua and list only the difference between Wen Yuan Ying Hua and the collected works. The second one is making some simple judgments rather than listing only the difference. The third one is not only listing the difference, but also have edition study and point out the reasons causing the difference. The collating Wen Yuan Ying Hua used the self-calibration Method, which will distinguish the repetitive articles through compare the different writings in the whole anthology. Finding some collation evidences in that book help to solve the problem of the character. The collating Wen Yuan Ying Hua used the Referential Emendation Method, which will solve the problem of the character through comparing with other books, same kind of books and some annotations. The collating Wen Yuan Ying Hua used the Reasoning Emendation Method, without the record of version, which will obtain some conclusions through an extensive collection of the reasons. According to certain fact to it has made logical reasoning without the reference to direct evidence. To distinguish the textual errors of the allusion used in articles use those allusions as a basis for reasoning emendation.Fourth, in the study of the achievements and characteristics of collating Wen Yuan Ying Hua, its achievement is good at using some inside things include the text of the collating object itself, phonology, exegesis, and other proofs, and is good at using some outside things include the emendator’s name, address, decrees and regulations as proofs. The characteristic of Wen Yuan Ying Hua Bian Zheng on the emendation study is good at using Referential Emendation Method, Reasoning Emendation Method and other methods of collating. It is insisting on its own views, but not making arbitrary decision, seeking truth from facts, and holding cautious attitude. Listing the difference provided some version information. The examples of collating were rich and aimed to summarize the experience of collation, however, there were a lack in the analysis of the reasons causing errors. Fifth, in the study of the Wen Yuan Ying Hua Bian Zheng and the collation of the Song Dynasty, this paper discusses the overview of the collation of the Song Dynasty, through analysis on the Wen Yuan Ying Hua Bian Zheng, We found some characteristics of the collation of the Song Dynasty, there is no concept of Dibon, the range of the collation didn’t be limited in itself and included the other versions and the other books, not only using this book,but also using this book to collate other book. It is jumping on the truth, and paying attention to the evidences, and having not empty talk. The collation of the Song Dynasty hasn’t been independent yet, and there were not clear boundaries between collation, textual research and compilation, those conceptions is promiscuous.
