FanLi of ancient books was born early in the Pre-Qin Period. It is the common properties existing inside the book compilation, serving as the principle and norm for book compilers and playing a programmatic role in the overall planning of each book. As precious cultural heritage left over by the history, it includes colorful compiling methods and rich experience accumulated during the long practice of the ancient people of our country. It has important meanings for carrying forward the national culture and flourishing contemporary book compilation. However, little effort has been taken for the study of FanLi of ancient books and there has not been a systematic book on it. In view of this, I proceeded from the study results of the predecessors, adopted scientific methods, went through large number of books and consulted plenty of literatures, intending to make an overall and comprehensive in-depth probe into Fanli of ancient books. There are 11 diagrams and 7 tables in this dissertation. The whole dissertation consists of six parts written in around 200,000 words. Listed below are the main contents:Chapterâ… General Introduction to FanLi of Ancient Books. It includes such contents as the definitions, contents, types and values of the ancient-book FanLi. The dissertation proceeds from the study of word sources for the specific analysis of the fundamental meanings of "Fan" and "Li" under the special conditions before illumination is made about the "FanLi" for its definition. FanLi covers wide ranges of contents which fall into three categories:explanation about the compilation process of books, explanation about the contents of compiled books and explanation about the forms of book-compilation, each briefly expounded with the support of original contents quoted from the ancient books. There are many different kinds of FanLi, and it is classified by the author, the location and the applicable scope into different types in this chapter. In the end, this chapter has addressed the values and functions of FanLi in eight aspects. Chapter II Development History of FanLi of Ancient Books. This chapter first probes the origination time of FanLi, then studies the development of FanLi of ancient books from four aspects of the number and varieties of books, the innovation of FanLi and the study of FanLi, the characteristic of FanLi respectively in five periods:pre-Qin and Western and Eastern Han Dynasties; Wei, Jin, North and South Dynasties; Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties; Song and Yuan Dynasties and Ming and Qing Dynasties.Chapter III General FanLi of Ancient Books. This chapter studies the general FanLi of ancient books in five aspects of the titles of ancient books, autographs of the authors, measuring units, modes of compilation and lipogram. The study of titles of ancient books introduces the history of book titles, sums up the forms of book naming and analyzes the reasons for different books with the same title and different titles for the same book. The study of the author autographs of ancient books briefs the history of author autographs and sums up the means of it. The study of measuring units specifies the names of the units used in history to measure books, sums up the means of marks for the volumes of ancient books and the ways to divide ancient books into volumes and analyzes the reasons for changes in the volumes of ancient books. The modes of compilation mainly introduces such modes of compilation as Zhuan, Bian, Zhu, Shu, Jian, Xue, JiJie, ZhangJu. Lipogram outlines the history of lipogram, concludes the kinds of lipogram and summaries various methods of lipograms.Chapter IV FanLi of History Books. chronological style, Ji-Zhuan-style, and Ben-Mo-Style are the three main styles of history books with their respective compiling FanLi. This chapter lays stresses on the three types, introduces their characteristics respectively and elaborates on the process through which the three types have developed and improved themselves.Chapter V FanLi of Ancient Corpus. Corpus includes Separate Collection and Group Collection. This chapter studies FanLi of Separate Collection in five aspects of compiler, naming, contents, layout, preface and appendix as well as that of Group Collection in selecting styles, layout styles, appellation of the author, selected works of the compiler himself, biography of the author, comments on the works, etc. Wen Xuan is the first poetry-and-prose collection in actual existence in our country. It has bidden profound influences to later generations. Therefore, this chapter studies it as a specific case from the angels of compiling scope, characteristics of the collected works, compiling styles and its influences to the later generations.Chapter VI Conclusion For Summary. On the basis of the previous five chapters, this one summaries the four features of the development of FanLi of ancient books and analyzes the five factors that affect the development of it.
