ObjectivesThe aim of this research is to rate the effectiveness of acupuncture and Chinese nutritional therapy vs. dietary intervention as a treatmentfor polycystic ovarian syndrome, for improved patient compliancy.MethodsThree questionnaires were drafted. A baseline questionnaire was used to update the symptoms, lifestyle choices and treatment preferences for the patients suffering from PCOS.The second questionnaire was intended to analyze the percentage of patients in a population pool that actually use acupuncture, diet or diet with acupuncture to treat the polycystic ovarian syndrome. The last questionnaire was a post intervention questionnaire which was used by the patients after undergoing8weeks of dietary and acupuncture treatment.32patients were randomly divided into two groups of22and10. The group of10was given no intervention and was the control group. The group of22was given the dietary and acupuncture treatment.Results(1) Only33.65%people were diagnosed with PCOS until the age of20, the rest were diagnosed after the age of20, early diagnosis could improve PCOS management.(2) Nearly40%of the respondents were taking less or more than the required sleep.(3) It was surprising to note that out of1,222respondents only a total of2%were using Chinese medicine and acupuncture for treating PCOS.(4) Only45%Out of a total1,187people found it easy to stick to their treatment plan,55%found it difficult.(5) According to the latest trends in food choices,48%preferred carbohydrates and50%protein, half the people suffering from PCOS were using the wrong food choices, as excess of carbohydrates can make the disease symptoms worse and lead to type II diabetes.(6) Nearly40%of the people out of1,194could not stick to their treatment plan as they felt several adverse effects.(7) Only25%of the respondents reported normal menstrual bleeding.52%reported heavy and21.72%light. This shows quite clearly that PCOS can be divided into many syndromes.(8) nearly88%of PCOS sufferers suffered from excess body hair.(9) According to the latest statistics from my research, out of1,241respondents48%progressed to type II diabetes.(10) Nearly76%of PCOS sufferers reported excess stress, this is a very high percentage, it may be directly related to life-style choices or excess androgen levels in blood.Conclusions(1) diet and acupuncture are superior to Diet alone.(2) acupuncture does significantly improve the symptoms of PCOS(3) a low GI diet does improve the symptoms of PCOS significantly(4) acupuncture and diet together have a better outcome in treating PCOS as compared to diet alone.
