Objective To investigate the characteristics of abnormal menstruations in women with PCOS in China, and evaluate the prediction value of the early life events such as the birth weight and multiple menstruation changes in puberty, for the accurate diagnosis of PCOS in adulthood. Methods The studied group consisted of236patients who has been diagnosed of PCOS according to the2003Rotterdam criteria. The other60healthy women were recruited as controls. Menstrual status, birth weight were evaluated, digital average values were compared between the groups. Different menses patterns were classified for the differences of subtype distributions. Birth weight and menstruation status as the puberty were evaluated for the prediction of PCOS in adulthood. Results Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a set of symptoms complex. The clinical manifestations are heterogeneous such as the menses features, diverse irregularities and patterns occurring alone or in combination. Trigger events were reported in69.7%of the late-onsets, and there are2peaks partly owing to some trigger event such as social events, weight gain, worsened unhealthy lifestyles or drugs. Birth weight gives no hint in the prediction of PCOS diagnosis. Abnormal menses emerging in age17,18and the3rd year after menarche may display more likelihood for the diagnosis prediction of PCOS, better the2nd year after menarche. Conclusions Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is heterogeneous with diverse clinical manifestations. The same goes with the diverse menses features, for irregularities and different patterns. Trigger events were reported partly in late-onsets such as social events, weight gain, worsened unhealthy lifestyles and drugs. Birth weight gives no hint for the prediction of PCOS diagnosis. Abnormal menses occurring in age17,18and the3rd year after menarche may provide better significance for the diagnosis prediction of PCOS.
