Objective:The purpose of this study was to explore the distribution of TCM syndromes and effects of life regulation in menstrual disorder women with polycystic ovary syndrome.Study Design:This study was a random, prospective, case-control study.100 cases of PCOS patients with menstrual disorder were recruited by Hongkong traditional Chinese medicine clinic from 2012.6 to 2012.12, including 50 cases of adolescent PCOS and 50 cases of adult PCOS to divided into experimental group and control group with 25 cases in each subgroups, and treated by Chinese medicine combined with life regulation therapy or simple Chinese medicine respectively. Observe the menstrual disorder types, distribution of TCM syndromes and the correlation between them of PCOS, and compare the differences before and after 3 months’treatments of body mass index, basal sex hormones, ovarian volume, and the number of antral follicles and the total efficiency.Results:(1) The TCM syndrome of liver depression had a significantly higher proportion of adolescent PCOS (P< 0.05), but no significant differences in others (P> 0.05). (2) There was no significant correlation between the type of menstrual disorder and distribution of TCM syndromes (P< 0.05). (3) Adolescent PCOS:both groups reduced serum T, LH and LH/FSH levels (P< 0.05), and the experimental group had a better effects on them (P< 0.05) and also decreased the ovarian volume and average number of unilateral antral follicles (P< 0.05), but no difference of total efficiency between them (80% vs 76%, P> 0.05). (4) Adult PCOS:both groups reduced serum T, LH and LH/FSH levels (P< 0.05), and the experimental group had a better effects on LH and LH/FSH (P< 0.05) and decreased the volume of ovary (P< 0.05), but no difference of total efficiency between two groups (86% vs 76%, P> 0.05).Conclusions:(1) Adolescent and adult PCOS had the same menstrual disorder feature with oligo-menorrhea and amenorrhea. (2) There were differences of TCM syndromes distribution of adolescent and adult PCOS. Liver stagnation syndrome was found mostly in adolescent PCOS and kidney-yang deficiency syndrome in adult PCOS. The proportions of TCM syndromes from high to low:liver stagnation, deficiency of kidney-yang, deficiency of kidney-yin, deficiency of spleen, phlegm and dampness syndrome in adolescent PCOS, and deficiency of kidney-yang, deficiency of kidney-yin, phlegm and dampness, deficiency of spleen, an liver stagnation syndrome in adult PCOS. (3) Both the treatments of Chinese medicine combined with life regulation therapy and simple Chinese medicine can effectively improve the PCOS endocrine hormone environment, reduce T, LH and LH/FSH levels, and decrease ovarian volume and antral follicles number, but the former effectiveness is better. (4) The life regulation therapy has the characteristics of simple, safety and economy in treating adolescence and adult PCOS to exhibit an important influence on female reproductive endocrine, which enhance the effects of traditional Chinese medicine.
