Based on the analysis of “Gardening literature” in Ming Dynasty, this thesisstudies spatial environment of the garden.“Gardening literature” is actually acollection of ‘impression of garden’. In a particular research angle, impression ofgarden can be decomposed into impression unit and its combination. This thesis holdsthe opinion that the purpose of designing garden is to impress people. Therefore,“impression design” is an ideal design method.By selecting “Gardening literature” in Ming Dynasty as the research material, this thesis analyzes the impression and space information in “Gardening literature”and then reorganizes them to build a corresponding frame in order to explore theprinciple of space unit, space model and spatial design in impression design. The study of “Gardening literature” is carried out in the following four steps:First, based on the richness of information in its space and impression,70piecesof “Gardening literature” were chosen as examples from a larger collection of155pieces.In the second step, by analyzing and reorganizing the information in “Gardeningliterature”, useful space information and impression information are selected, extracted and summarized. In the third step, we redefine space information and use diagrams, whicharchitects are familiar with, reconstructing space. Although the examining space willnot possess the accuracy of field surveying and mapping, it has the effective spaceinformation to produce impressive effect and is directly related to the target of “theformation of impression”.At last, based on the foundation made in the early step in this study, this thesismakes a connection between space form and space impression, and forms asystematic impression-space frame. There are two main parts of this thesis, which are the unit composition and unitorganization. The first part focuses on the composition of impression unit in“Gardening literature”, and then examines the composition of space unit. In this part, this thesis expounds systematically on the impression unit’s connotation andformation. It divides the impression unit into five types, and then expounds theirprinciples, patterns and space models one by one.The second part focuses on the organization of impression unit in “Gardeningliterature”, and then examines the organization of space unit. space macro system, which is complicated and diversified, is composed by many impression units usingthree kinds of organization——unit combination, unit sequence and unit connection. In this part, we explore the discipline of unit organization. This thesis analyzes the problem of space design using the perspective ofimpression and studies in “Gardening literature” of Ming Dynasty. Based on uniqueperspectives and research materials, this thesis presents the “five circles” elements inthe construction of space impression, and classifies the impression into five typesaccording to its “landscape setting” elements. This represents a relative systematicdesign method and possesses strong practical applicability.
