Traditional ERP systems, product-structure-oriented, centralized-plan-driven and lack of flexibility, has been greatly challenged by the requirements for helping the governmental and nongovernmental small and medium enterprises, confronting the fierce impact of the international market, to agilely response to the market changes and survive the competition in the volatile environment. The academic and industrial communities have made great efforts to improve the flexibility and reconfigurability of ERP systems by focusing on software architecture and implementation techniques. However, the reconfigurability of ERP systems cannot be achieved only from the perspective of software technology, but the renewal of the underlying management concepts and the redesign of the entire ERP system architecture according to the characteristics of the current business environment and the consequent management requirements are more imperative. In this paper, the reconfigurable ERP system based BOX (bill of X) is established, which can support the initialization reconfiguration to meet the individual requirements of different companies in ERP implementation stage, the dynamic reconfiguration to adapt to the changes of the environments in ERP operation stage, and internal and external reconfiguration. Firstly the fundamental theory of reconfigurable ERP is investigated and the BOX model for the reconfigurable ERP is proposed; the bill of generalized work (BOGW) centers is developed as the enterprise structure model and reconfigurational operations of generalized work center are put forward; the bill of enterprise processes (BOEP) is adapted as the enterprise process model and process-algebra-based modeling, analysis, evaluation and reconfiguration methods are discussed; the bill of resource consumption (BORC) is extended as the cost management model incorporating the activity-based costing (ABC) method based on generalizedwork center; the bill of decision unit agents is introduced as the distributed decision model and the dynamic optimized allocation of distributed manufacturing resources based on MAS (multi-agent system) is studied; finally the ERP implementation method based on BOX is presented which can provide theoretical supports to the whole lifecycle of the ERP implementation and realize the strategy of fast ERP management system reconfiguration. BOX can cope with the ERP system reconfiguration from the perspective of architecture and management concept renewal, and provide strong support to the development of the new generation of ERP systems.
