As the telecommunication service gets rich, more and more terminal devices are getting intelligent. For these intelligent terminal devices, network and service parameters get more complicated, failures and security risks are increasing. Terminal device has become key factor that impact experience and satisfaction of user on services, and may restrict the development of new services. Meanwhile, in the next generation network, terminal device is not only a portal that present services to user, it also play an important role in collecting user-aware quality of communication services and involving in providing pervasive communication service. How to effectively manage intelligent terminal device and make it normal and reliable, how to collect user-aware quality of service via terminal device and provide lean guarantee of service to users, how to carry out various pervasive communication service via terminal device, become an inevitable problem when the communication network turns into user-centric, and play an important role for popularization and development of communication services.The paper firstly analyzes terminal management related researches and their shortages, then analyzes requirements for management of terminal in the next generation network, makes researches on management model of terminal and several key problems related to it, and finally designs and realizes a prototype system to verify the ideas proposed. The main contribution of this paper can be summarized as follows:1) Management model of terminal was proposed. Firstly, a model was proposed based on the management requirements of terminal in the next generation network, whose main components include terminal management node and terminal control center. Then the composition of terminal management node was described in detail. Furthermore, the cooperation mechanism and interface technology among terminal management nodes, terminal control center and other operation support nodes were analyzed. The proposed management model of terminal could make heterogeneous terminal devices and their network normal and reliable, support autonomic management of terminal, support to provide high quality service to customer and could support to provide pervasive communication service.2) A modeling method and a common model for terminal management information were proposed. The paper gives a modeling method for terminal management information, including modeling principles and processes of modeling. In addition, a systematic and common terminal management information model was established based on the method. The model could provide complete management information from device, network, service to customer layer based on the hierarchical domain organization framework. By make up the shortages of existing terminal management information models, the proposed model could provide full support in respect of information for management behaviors on the terminal in the next generation network. The model is a common and base model and can be expand flexibly according to specific terminal environment and service scenario.3) Autonomic management architecture and process for management of terminal were proposed. By focusing on the self-management requirements of self-organizing terminal, the paper gives an autonomic management architecture for terminal, describes function of each model in the architecture, and gives closed-loop process and spiral model for autonomic management of terminal. After that, P2P-based network organizing method for autonomic management nodes was proposed. The paper also defines autonomic management services, which enhance the cooperation capability between management nodes from service layer. Different autonomic management model could be realized by deploying the autonomic management services flexibly. 4) A management information model based terminal intelligent adapter framework and service processes were proposed. A method to fulfill pervasive communication service based on the management information model was analyzed. The terminal intelligent adapter framework for pervasive communication service mainly includes intelligent management and control center and terminal management information base. For scenarios such as the services to be visited, handover and updated, interaction processes among terminal, terminal control center and intelligent management and control center were analyzed based on the terminal management information. The reasoning mechanism based on the management information model was also analyzed in detail. Based on the framework, terminal management node could adapt to terminal environment dynamically, and then provide individualized service to customer and assure seamless handover of services when new terminal devices are selected.
