Wireless sensor networks have seen a great thrust of research activities during the current decade. Production of low cost sensor nodes coupled with technical advancements in the field of nano-technology and MEMS have enabled a promising future for wireless sensor networks. Their application domains are diverse and these resource constrained networks are believed to be deployed for habitat monitoring, disaster recovery, and numerous urban applications. In this thesis, a novel study of network level performance issues in wireless sensor networks is presented. This study is based on proposing algorithms for energy efficient wireless sensor networks. In a geographically placed wireless sensor network, we study energy efficient schemes for clustering, localization and QoS based congestion estimation. The solutions to these problems are presented in this thesis along with their simulation analysis. This thesis further contributes in presenting efficient service discovery mechanisms for making wireless sensor networks a part of the future ubiquitous computing age.Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are characterized by low-energy sensor motes distributed in an area of interest. The communication is ad hoc in nature and poses greater challenge than traditional wireless networks. While application deployment of such WSN has been started, it still offers a great degree of research opportunity for energy efficient solutions.
