Contact IC card has many disadvantages such as easy to be contaminated and long communication time, due to need to communicate with the reader by contact. While contactless IC card born with many advantages, such as less communication time, high security, and reliability. Lots of research and great improvements are in contactless IC card since 8 decades of 20th century. Contactless IC card found its application in traffic, finance, identification, entrance admission, and goods transfer. And it will appear in commonality service payment, physical match, and some other application fields we can't predict now in the future.IC card reader, as a component of IC card system, is very important to the whole IC card system. Due to the popularity of Contactless IC card, the necessary of portable reader is become more and more urgent. And it makes it necessary for the designer of reader of contactless IC card to overcome some obstacles such as integrated more function, consume low power, operate under low voltage. Lower the cost.Related international standard and development of contactless IC card is firstly introduced in this paper. Basic principle and architecture of contactless IC card system is introduced too. After detailed analysis of the functional and performance requirement of the reader of contactless IC card system, we studied and analysis the possibility of design and manufacture of single chip integrated reader of contactless IC card of ISO 14443. During the study and analysis, we keep three important words in our mind: low power, low voltage and low cost.After detailed and in-depth study many types of CMOS power amplifier, an new updated and novel class E power amplifier is used for the output stage of the transmitter circuit of the reader; demodulator composed of time variance linear device is selected for the demodulator of the receiver of the reader for its low power, low cost and easy to integrated in standard CMOS process prosperities. From production site, many other issues such as reliability, stability, and yield is taken into consideration during the design of the reader; design and layout of mixed signal chip and the noise rejection is studied in this paper too.Base on 0.6um CMOS process, a prototype of single chip integrated contactless IC card reader for ISO 14443 is designed and manufactured. Test results indicated the chip can match requirement both functional and performance of contactless IC card system. Low power, low operation voltage and low cost goals is implement in this chip. The designed chip gain good performance even compare to international counterpart, especially for static current (less than 5uA). The design single chip reader is very suitable for portable reader application.
