With the rapid development of IC and network technologies, many devices, such as network computer, personal digital assistant, intelligent mobile phone and so on, are increasingly popular. Besides, services on network are becoming more and more diversified. Therefore, the model providing information services is changing to ubiquitous computing environment (UCE), within which people will be unconsciously provided with various network services. At the same time, there are many challenges to manage a great amount of terminal services and terminal devices in the future UCE. As follows, we present in this thesis some research work on the management of intelligent terminal services and devices, and besides some research results.1 , We propose the concept of terminal presentation unit (TPU) in OS to handle heterogeneous and dynamic terminal devices in UCE. TPU is a logic module that is mainly located in the device driver layer in OS and corresponds to a user who is using terminal services. The management of TPUs is based on the information from service sessions and terminal devices. We can flexibly manage terminal devices using a TPU and support a user to achieve consistent and persistent terminal services using different terminal devices in different places.2 , We propose a new framework to manage terminal services and devices based on the concept of TPU. This framework is hierarchical and there are 4 layers in total. The top first layer is system terminal service management layer, below which are executing node terminal services management layer and TPU management layer in sequence. The bottom layer is communication management layer, which provides secure and efficient data channels for terminal applications. Functions provided by layers of this framework are closely correlated. At the same time, they are very independent during implementation.3, We propose a new kind of protocol for terminal devices based on the above TPU. The protocol is mainly focused on interactive processes between terminal devices and TPU. Operations on the terminal devices by terminal services are based on the virtual file system in Linux OS. The protocol specifies processes of device discovery, registry and device state maintenance. The protocol is simple and can be used by simple devices. It provides a flexible...
