Virtual Prototyping (VP) is the technologies of creating the digital model of the physical prototype and further more testing and evaluating the model. Coupled with advanced modeling, collaborative simulation and analysis in various areas, information integration and management, and virtual reality technologies, VP functionally simulates and optimizes the designed parts in a very fast, economical and efficient manner. The VP technology was pioneered and adopted initially by large automotive and aerospace industries. Nowadays, more and more enterprises, including lots of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing industry, also begin to take VP more seriously. The advanced VP technologies for complex products are becoming the hotspots that need to be further studied. In our country, many projects for VP granted by the National High Technology Research and Development Program have paved the way for VP research and its applications.Knowledge based Modeling and distributed collaborative simulation technologies are the fundamental part of VP.Knowledge based modeling technology aims to give solutions to two key problems, which are knowledge based integration and knowledge based reuse. Since the development of virtual prototype is a complex process, which may involves different engineers with different background knowledge, it is important to provide designers with the knowledge based integrated environment to obtain and exchange ideas more effectively. Knowledge base modeling technique aims to help engineers create the "flexible" virtual prototype, from which engineers can rapidly recreate another virtual prototype of the similar product by efficiently modifying the original "flexible" virtual prototype.Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology which is often regarded as an extension to 3D computer graphics with advanced input and output devices. By virtue of VR, designers can plan, evaluate, and verify the virtual prototype more intuitively. With...
