Facing more intense global market competition and rapidly changing customer requirements, manufacturing enterprises have to change their product design and fabrication modes greatly in short time. In recent years, Internet has become a worldwide information platform for sharing all kinds of messages. Modern network technology allows manufacturers to create a new information environment for implementing a new design philosophy, the so-called remote rapid product development, which makes distributed rapid product development available. Virtual prototyping is a new development mode in Internet era, which is based on the policy of integrated products and process development (IPPD). It combines the computer simulation method with modern management theory, system-engineering principle, modeling technology and tools supported by information technology, and provides distributed integration environment for the whole life cycle of products design and evaluation. The objections of researching rapid product development are coping with changing markets, increasing global competition and changing customer demands effectively.According to the new progressing trends of mechanical product rapid development technology and the practice of developing pump CAD system by the author, in this paper, the importance of current virtual prototyping based rapid product development technologies for manufacturing and the basic key enabling technologies of how to build distributed rapid product development system on Internet are discussed, and the future role of rapid product development technologies in network (virtual) manufacturing is analyzed. It also explores the conceptual models, key technologies and implementing methods of rapid product development system. A distributed rapid product development methodology based on virtual prototyping is proposed under the concept of enterprise integration and concurrent design principle. This paper also presents a new system architecture of pump CAD for remote rapid product development and rapid prototyping manufacturing. The main characteristics and creative ideas of the paper are as follows:(1) Through the overview of virtual prototyping, rapid product development and other relevant conceptions, the developing process of virtual prototyping for mechanical products and relevant key technologies are discussed, An architecture of virtual prototyping design system for mechanical products, which is designed by CAD modeling system and its integration environment, virtual sample environment, virtual prototyping analyzing and'This research work is supported by the National Nature Science Funding, P. R. China under Grants No. 59975063evaluation system, virtual interactive equipment, distributed web environment and database serving system, is presented. Based on the above works, the establishing environment of pump's virtual prototyping is analyzed, and the flow of designing, testing, and running of pump's virtual prototyping is described.(2) According to the main idea of the information model of conceptual design for sharing messages, this paper discusses the methods of geometry modeling, feature modeling based on object oriented technology, parametric feature modeling, and their application in designing pump's key parts, mainly presents the Pump Virtual Prototype Integrated Information Model (PVPIIM) based on the object and STEP technology under network, and deals with the framework of PVPIIM, feature definition and expressing method of pump's key parts and mapping technique between EXPRESS and C++. This paper also presents the requirement of complying with the object's standard expressing method under virtual reality environment based on PVPIIM to support the whole process of virtual product development.
