At present the development and change of grid technology is very rapid and there are many research field in this technology. Among the existing research fields and organizations, most of them emphasize particularly on the grid object's organizing and utilizing mode. But the study of grid subject's support is not very deep. Grid subject is an important constituent element of grid system. But now there is not clear and integrated grid user management architecture, model or system as the traditional operating system and WEB system have. If the growing user resource in grid cannot be managed suitably, the utilizing dissemination and expanding will be awfully influenced.The study of grid user management cannot consider the user subject per se. Grid is a scalable and dynamic system composed of many elements. The study of its user management should first start with the relationship between user subject and the other grid element. Then combining with grid user's characteristics and based on the grid function relating with user subject, grid user management should be studied from the point of view of a system. The key problems of grid user management are the user orgnization, expression and behavior mode, the integar architecture and elements's mutual relationship problems and a functional and scalable grid user management model and system. The VEGA-US user management system is a subsystem of the CNGrid project and an important component of the China national high performance grid computing environment portal project. The target of this subsystem is to realize a dynamic, scalable and cross-domain user management system.The main contributions of reseach on grid user management are listed as following.1) For the grid user organization and expression, the project presents a grid user organizing and expressing model-RES (Role Expression Session) model. According to the characteristics of grid subject, this model integrates the dynamic, secure, scalable features of grid system and the interaction among users and other grid elements. This model is a layered expression model. It provides the user subject's expression methods of different layer and the mapping relationship among these layers. This model also describes its support to the grid function relating with subject and its utilization pattern in grid system. This model solves the problem of the grid user orgnization and expression and grid subject management's support to grid characteristics.
