During the development of informational society, more and more are required to the network technology. Now and later, both IP and ATM are decisive technology in the future high-performance network environment. So researches about IP and ATM are hot points among the studies of fields of network technology. In this paper, based on the development of IP and ATM technology we study the IP and ATM internetworking technology. Topics includes the ATM network throughput performance, services mapping between IIS and ATM QoS services, transport performance of TCP/IP application data stream in IP-ATM network environment, and protocol model design for application to access ATM services.1. We analyze and test the throughput performance of IP-ATM experiment network. The results show that we can not get the ideal theoretical throughput. And the network can not provide the ideal QoS support for application because of the current API limitation. We conclude that Protocol overhead, the hardware and less of traffic management are the main reasons for the throughput performance drop.2. In the discussion of services mapping between IIS and ATM QoS services, we detailed the mapping solutions, and suggest a method to modulate the parameter mapping with the buffer in the IP-ATM edge device, especially for the modulation between rate and MBS . Accordingly, we deduce the formula for parameter modulation.3. Transportation characteristics are studied for TCP/IP application data stream in IP-ATM internetworking environment. We compare the results for ABR and VBR VC connection to transfer TCP/IP data stream using STCP emulation software, and the results show UBR VC connection always have better throughput performance than ABR VC connection in LAN, MAN and WAN environments if the buffer is enough to avoid severe cells drop. From the study we find this enough buffer is normal configuration for current ATM switches.4. It's a important result that the UBR VC has advantage to transfer...
