Interconnection networks have become a key factor to improve the performance of MPPs. It is very important to determine the performance characteristics of interconnection networks according to running practical parallel programs. The final goal to run parallel programs on MPPs often is to cost less time or/and to admit larger computation scales of the parallel applications. The computation capability of a single PE has advanced too largely because of the great advantages in microelectrical and packing technologies. Message passing model has widely been adapted as a standard information transmission between processing elements in practical parallel programs. Interconnection networks have become a bottleneck of efficient transmission of messages in parallel applications.Therefore, the dissertation focuses on the performance characteristics of interconnection networks. We first presented a practical parallel application in automatic test pattern generations for combinational circuits. We analyzed the various factors to affect the performance of the parallel programs. Second, we analyzed the famous parallel benchmarks of NAS so that we analyzed the various performance requirements for interconnection networks by the parallel benchmarks based on the superstep model.Considering the analyzed performance requirements for interconnection networks, we analyzed a kind of interconnection networks, called Cube-of-Rings. We found that the Cube-of-Rings networks have a series of good performance characteristics that we hope.
