With the development of distributed interactive simulation, multi-resolution modeling (MRM) becomes one of the key technologies for advanced modeling and simulation. MRM has deep influence on the development of modeling and simulation. But the research on MRM is now on its very initial stage. In this dissertation, we studied MRM from four aspects: basic concept, specification theory, modeling method and system design.Through the study on the concept of modeling and simulation from the viewpoint of system theory, homomorphism theory and information theory, we illuminate that multi-resolution and multi-facet is one of the intrinsic attributes of models. Based on the studies of the others, we give the concept of resolution and multi-resolution modeling from the viewpoint of distributed interactive simulation. Then we compare both of these two concepts with some other similar concepts. From these researches we found the concept system of multi-resolution modeling. The formal description of MRM is important for understanding MRM deeply. It is also the foundation of MRM theory. But it is still a blank in this area until now. An effective method which describes both models of different resolution and systems composed of different resolution models is needed urgently. We proposed a formal specification for MRM based on DEVS (Discrete Event Specification). Because MRM has the character of changing structure dynamically, we try to describe MRM using Dynamic Structure DEVS (DSDEVS) and analyze the shortcomings of this description. Then we propose the description of multi-resolution model family (MF). On the foundation of MF and DSDEVS, we propose the formal description of multi-resolution modeling specification (MRMS) and prove that this specification is closed under coupling. MRMS is a universal description of MRM, which can describe all kinds of multi-resolution model systems. It has the character of hierarchy, modularity and closure under coupling.Models in a multi-resolution model family are not irrelevant. The relations among models of different resolution in MF are studied in this dissertation. We analyze the relations from four layers: simulation analysis layer, I/O layer, state layer and structure layer. Maintaining the consistency among the models in different resolutions is one of the main tasks of MRM. We analyze the problem of consistency maintenance in MF at different layers, especially at the state layer. We also give the measurement of consistency between models of different resolutions at different layers in MF.In the study of MRM methods, we first introduce some influential MRM methods such as aggregation and disaggregation, selective viewing, multi-resolution entities and cross resolution interactions. Then according to distributed interactive simulation, we research theproblem of aggregation/disaggregation and parallel implementation in detail. In the study of aggregation/disaggregation, we first give some theoretical analysis using MRMS and quotient space theory. Then we research the problem of consistency maintenance of memoryless system, the design of map functions, the witch mechanism among different resolution models and the solution for chain disaggregation. For parallel implementation, we first give some theoretical analysis using MRMS and two new concepts: morphism attribute and morphism event, then we research the problems of consistency maintenance, morphism event processing and interaction conflicts in parallel implementation. The implementation of MRM is another emphasis in the dissertation. We research the implementation of MRM under HLA (High Level Architecture) based distributed multi-resolution federation design. First, we research the theory and its usage in multi-resolution modeling of ownership management of attribute and object. Then we propose some common techniques for multi-resolution federation design and implementation, such as: federate partition, federation running mode choosing, class design and FOM (Federation Object Model) design. Next, we describe the design and implementation of...
