From news practice it has been noticed in this dissertation that in newscommunication there are a large amount of program words which have developed intoa special stylistic characteristics after repetitive usage, development and stabilization.Based on this reality, it puts forward the concept of "narrative stylistics" and tries tocorrect the traditional "newspaper stylistics" to fit the real situation of stylistics innews communication. Not only newspaper stylistics but also narrative stylistics areresponsible for the "report and comment of recent happenings". Because of the samefunction, they are both contained in the functional system of "newspaper stylistics".However, their differences in other determinant variables, such as the medium or toolof description and whether or not participators are on the spot, make them show polarcharacteristics in the system of language characteristics. The existence of the situationraises a new demand on the research of newspaper stylistics, especially stylisticcriteria. Through a series of research of special topics it gives a new understanding ofthe definition and orientation of newspaper stylistics and comprehensive languagecriteria, which are decided by function and coupled with other secondary variables. Chapter one divides news into "independent materialized" monologue style and"face-to-face communication" dialogue style according to difference in the productionof texts, chooses typical report texts and as comparative objects, and puts forwardthe basic research thinkings. Based on the knowledge that "fact" is the essential character of news and thatnews is a special narration, chapter two and three introduce the similarities anddifferences between the theory of narration and the two kinds of texts in newscommunication in the aspects of time of narration, point of view, structure model andso on. They also emphasize that report texts are special written narration, whilenarration texts are special oral narration. The research constructs the macro-structuremodels of report texts and narration texts and sum up the intrinsic reasons whypropositions of texts are cohesive. Propositions of report texts can intrinsically becohesive by means of time linearity or "core-adjunctive" function and propositions ofnarration texts by means of time linearity and topic relevancy.Chapter four describes the signals of language forms in the development of the twokinds of texts from the angle of text topics development model and construct thehierarchical system of topic signals. The purpose is to observe the same topic signalsof the two kinds of texts when controlled by the same function and the different ones iiwhen joined by other variables like mode。 Chapter five describes the "shared characteristics" or "outstanding measures" ofthe two kinds of texts with stylistic elements and summarizes the different styles ofreport texts and narration texts. Chapter six depicts and count and the theme choices and information structures ofreport texts and narration texts and further discloses their stylistic differences in textstructures. On the basis of above comparative research of special topics, the last part drawsup a new hierarchical system of newspaper stylistics and analyzes the intersection andpenetration of styles in news communication and the blending style formed throughthe "talking of news". The summary briefly sums up the main ideas of the whole dissertation, commentsupon its innovative points and shortage, and points out the direction of later research.
