The infrared focal plane arrays (IRFPA) can be classified into the cooled focal plane arrays and uncooled focal plane arrays (UFPA). In this paper, the developing process of IRFPA is elaborated, and the developing trends are analyzed, and then, applications of IRFPA in the military affairs and the walks of life in the national economy are introduced. The IRFPA technology is involved in many fields of science. The key ones are mainly involved in infrared material, device, electronic processing and the readout integrated circuit (ROIC). Concerned with the parameter test of ROIC and the infrared image signal processing, this paper mainly research on three items. That is, the methods to improve the performance of the test system based on PC; the parameter test of ROIC and the infrared staring imaging based on the virtual instrument (VI) technology.In order to improve the performance of the test system based on PC, it is necessary to ensure that the system has the strong ability for anti-interference. The corresponding anti-interference techniques should be taken only having fully understood the interference source and its transmission routes according to certain conditions. Techniques based on hardware mainly include grounding, shielding, filtering and isolation. Measures should be taken to improve the anti-interference ability of I/O channels in PC as well. Techniques based on software mainly include all kinds of digital filtering, which is necessary to further reduce the interference into the system. In order to improve test precision, techniques such as auto-gain control, proper sampling rate select and dithering should be applied into the data acquisition process, and data pre-processing techniques should be used to eliminate data with careless error and correct data with system error.ROIC is one of the most important parts of IRFPA. It is necessary to develop a system to test the parameters of ROIC in order to correctly evaluate its performance. A VI is the combination of computer hardware and software technologies and instrumentation technologies. It is the developing trend of measuring and testing techniques. The developing environment of VI is selected according to the test requirements of ROIC. The multifunctional signal source, where the complex programmable logic device (CPLD) is as the core component, is developed to ensure the system can test all kinds of ROIC and its flexibility of the system. The corresponding parameter test modules are developed according to the test theory of ROIC. And software modules such as auto-gain control and data pre-processing are developed to ensure stability and test precision of the system. Compared with the similar domestic equipments, it is with small volume, high performance price ratio and is easy to modify and upgrade. It provides users with all kinds of functions to display data, which is helpful to qualitatively evaluate the performance of ROIC. This system can be applied into the test of solid image sensors and IRFPA if the necessary hardware and the corresponding test modules have been added. Now the system has been successfully used in the test of many research projects.The uncooled thermal imaging technology is one of the high technologies. Pyroelectric FPA is one kind of UFPA. According to the theory of pyroelectric imaging, a system based on VI technology to simulate the pyroelectric staring FPA imaging is developed, where the SSPA (Self Scanned Photodiode Array) device is used, with the irradiation of visible light. The simulation system includes the optics, chopper control, driving signal design, image data acquisition based on VI technology and image processing including image difference, non-uniformity correction (NUC), image intensification and dynamic display, etc. According to the corresponding theories, the author designed all these software modules.
