Medical science, developing from organs, cells and molecules to submolecules, is becoming increasingly specialized and sophisticated. However, the huge success in medical science and technology incur a lot of censures from people:Is modern medical development still based on the original unsophisticated love and infatuation to human life? Why are people more frustrated and skeptical with medical science being more advanced? Why do people harbor doubt and panic about genetic engineering and biotechnology? Why do so many people feel overwhelmed with medical expenses?Why do physician-patient conflicts become a sensitive nerve of the whole society? In the era where man's independence is based on material things, and technology and capital are the driving forces of social development, medical development and medical practice have deviated from the principle of "curing the sickness and saving the patient", and have been deprived of the humanistic care for people.The lack of emphasis on medical humanities in the cultivation and education of medical students is a severe challenge in medical education. It is a top priority in modern medical education and then medical undertakings, where medical educators are expected to be a mainstay among a variety of temptations in such an ever-changing society with diverse values,to balance the relationship between advancing the level of medical technology and nurturing humanistic spirit in the process of fostering qualified medical talent.The research,with "basic notions and theoretical studies—historical evolution and development—realistic situations and problem analysis—the presentation of corresponding solutions" as a technical research design, is focused on the theory and practice of medical humanistic education in the framework of Marxist dialectical materialism. It, by means of literature survey, interview with experts, case analysis, comparative study and contradiction analysis, analyzes and explores theoretical difficulties and practical problems revolving the following research questions:What is humanistic spirit? How was it formed and how did it evolve? What are the problems about the cultivation of medical humanities among modern medical students and the solutions?It aims at constructing and strengthening an education system for medical humanities, based on an inherent quality of the nature of the medical humanities education.Firstly, the paper defines the connotation of basic concepts about medical humanistic spirit, medical professionalism, medical ethics and morality, and reveals the role that medical humanistic spirit plays in the development of medical science and technology and student training by referring to basic theories of medical humanities—medicine essence, new humanism, the ethics of reverence for life and the theory of life education. Secondly, it summarizes ideologies of medical humanistic spirit under different medical models and types of nurturing medical humanistic spirit in different periods by reviewing the history of the development of medicine through time.Finally, in accordance to the analyses of the status quo of medical humanistic spirit education in Chinese current medical training and its existing problems, some specific measures are systematically put forward as to setting training goals in the education of medical humanities, strengthening the discipline construction of medical humanities, promoting a climate of medical humanistic culture,and perfecting the management system of the medical humanities education.
