T’u Hua Chien Wen Chih is a respectable and important art painting history work in acient China writen by Kuo Jo-hsu in Northern Song Dynasty. Compared with Li Tai Ming Hua Chi by Chang Yen-yuan, the recordation of artists’ time in his book just after the finalization of the former time, followed by the newcomers Teng ch’un Hua Chi. All of these constitute into a unique series in Southern Song Dynasty art painting history which called "History Biography series". T’u Hua Chien Wen Chih is the most comprehensive, essentially narrative and firmly theoretical work in such a great quantity of art painting works in Tang and Song Dynasties, which is known as another masterpiece painting history following by the Li Tai Ming Hua Chi. Otherwise, the related research currently can’t match the status of "The second painting history" far away comparing with the fruitful research committed by Chinese and foreign scholars since the twentieth century. Throughout the existing results including the sorting research from the philology angle and the elaborate, comment from the arts angle were all hard for going deep continued, as well as the worse condition of vague related documents and even unavoidable circulate erroneous phenomenon. This paper had done a more in-depth research on this painting historical work from both angles of philology and arts.In this paper, generally along three major research directions and draw arguments: firstly, from the perspective of history and philology, research these basic issues like authorship, writing process, version circulated, writing background and historical sources, etc, restoring its original appearance as well as possible. In the second, the third chapter, I clarified the contentious issue about Kuo’s family history in academics field right now, affirmed his identity of the descendants of the Northern Song founding hero Kuo Shouwen, Emperor Song Empress Kuo’s descendants. Meanwhile textual the T’u Hua Chien Wen Chih was finished in Yuan yu years. At the same time, pointout that T’u Hua Chien Wen Chih comprehensive previous historical documents and personal knowledge which is the book of the History of painting by Kuo Jo-hsu as the collectors aristocracy Scholars in Early Song once had risen the painting Connoisseur campaign.Secondly, from the perspective of academic history, I tried to combine with the study of Stylistics, investigating its writing thoughts and writing system. Additional, in chapter four, analyzed the structure of its contents, presentation of knowledge, theory, historical events compared with the other works during Tang and Song, T’u Hua Chien Wen Chih has changed a lot and this unique creation breakthrough in response to the new trends and fashion in painting since Tang and Five Dynasties, succession on the basis of Chang Yen-yuan’s book. As for its brief principles and narrative style was interrelated to the fashion of "Classical writings" in Early Song among the literati.Thirdly, from the perspective of arts, elucidation and summary its artistic thoughts and viewpoints. In chapter five, analyzing the points of "The pros and cons of ancient and modern", "painting styles" made by Kuo Jo-hsu, indicated that compared with the highlight historical completeness of writing and historical position of classicism by Chang Yen-yuan, Kuo Jo-hsu’s writings showed a keen sense of era and a enlightened art history observation. Next, analyzed the artistic ideology of philosophy, aesthetics origin to Kuo Jo-hsu, and associated the artistic thoughts among the literati in Northern Song. I pointed out that his artistic thoughts included carrying forward the subject consciousness of Life in art creation which reached agreement with the literati painting conception of the unique construction of Northern Song. The differences between Kuo Jo-hsu and Su Shih is that the former represented a "traditional mode of discourse" unlike the discussion about Su Shih painting bringing in the literati "Tao Tung" versus something about philosophical system, but continued to "Six Laws" as the center on the idea of painting.Through such a system in-depth study, this paper committed to regard T’u Hua Chien Wen Chih as the representative masterpiece of "Tang and Song painting history series", preserving a large number of rich, credible historical painting since Late-Tang and Five Dynasties. Meanwhile, It has its own academic connotation and value:not only inherited the narrative tradition of "In the biography of history as the center of painting knowledge system", but also had a distinct value of the times. The writing concepiton, stylistic rules and layout opened a new culture in the Song Dynasty Painting works. It inherited the "Six Laws" painting comments conception since Northern and Southern dynasties, while at the same time promoting the "Literati Painting view" Since Late-Tang. Its dual interpretation of the tradition of the times, making it become the representative works changing on the fashion occasion of Tang and Song Paintings.
