How to use computer to simulate the Chinese painting effect is a challenging subject in computer art field. It has wide application potential in commerce, art and entertainment, etc. At present, the simulation for Western painting methods including cartoon and painting in the non-realistic rendering fields is rather mature. However, the simulation for Chinese paintings is relatively less involved in current research. In current research achievement, computer simulations for Chinese painting are mostly based on simulate fluid or particle movement. But this kind of solution costs great computation because of the complex algorithm. In the occasions with higher real-time requirement, its slow computing speed is a big constraint. Especially in the current mainstream home computer system, this solution can't obtain satisfactory results for the hardware performance constraint. Therefore, simplifying the algorithm to improve the computing speed and maintaining good screen effect is a very meaningful and promising research field.This thesis proposes a new idea for the real-time rendering using software. It can perform the Chinese painting style rendering rapidly for hills, rocks and other 3D terrain models. Corresponding to the traditional skills of Chinese landscape drawing, a simulated texture-synthesis-based landscape rendering algorithm is proposed. It simulates the ink drawing process through two parts: painting the edge line part and internal colored part. For the edge line part, edge detection is done for the 3D model at first to identify the silhouette of the model real time; the edge lines are painted with thin and sleek brush; then these edge lines are connected through the stroke line mechanism, which outlines the terrain model with Chinese painting visual style. For the internal colored part, internal contour is filled through texture synthesis approach after the model profile is outlined. It can be done through another method by which the grounding color and profile line picture are superposed with the advanced painted texture pictures. The experiment results show that the algorithm achieves more desired result.The research focuses and main achievements of this thesis are as follow:1. A new simulation approach is proposed basing on the research and comparasion for the existing Chinese painting simulation technology, and absorbing some merits from existing technology. Although it sacrifices some of drawing result, it has higher efficiency and speed. Moreover, as it is irrelevant to the hardware drawing device, it has good portability.2. A set of new algorithms is brought out, including border detection and silhouette extraction for 3D model, edge line painting, Chinese painting brush simulation and 3D model illumination, etc. These algorithms are simple and efficient, and can better simulate the Chinese painting style and the artistic conception.3. According to the algorithms above, a system for rapid 3D terrain model rendering is developed, which achieves the effect of Chinese painting. From the experimental results, it realizes the real-time rendering for 3D models. The prominent advantage of this kind of pure-software Chinese painting simulation approach is rapid rendering. Comparing to the hardware-supported rendering, this software approach has rather satisfying rendering effect, better portability and costs less.
