ObjectiveEpidemiologic studies have suggested that the link between insomnia and depression is bidirectional, Because insomnia and depression have more severe incidence trend, Western medicine have some side effects and drug addiction, Base on thousands years of traditional Chinese medicine drug experience, particularly through the clinical use. From the "Treatise of Typhoid" and "Synopsis of Golden Chamber" provisions, according to the content of correlation discussion of Zhang Zhong Jing, it has relating a number of disorders of modern medicine insomnia and depression, this study attempts to explore more effective ways to help patients, but also to let Western people understand the special effective treatment of Chinese herbal products.MethodFirst, In this retrospective population-based study secondary data analysis was performed using data from Taiwan’s Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID), this study was to investigate the prescription patterns of CHPs and Western medicine for patients with these disorders in Taiwan, and analyze the frequency of using single herbs (SHs) and herbal formulas (HFs).Second, Suan-Zao-Ren-Tang It’s Modified Prescriptions treatment of insomnia, Gan-Mai-Da-Zao-Tang It’s Modified Prescriptions treatment of depression, Chai-Hu-Chia-Lung-Ku-Mu-Li-Tang Its modified Prescriptions treatment of depression, and make a meta-analysis of clinical studies and analyze its results. and futher discuss Suan-Zao-Ren-Tang,Gan-Mai-Da-Zao-Tang and Chai-Hu-Chia-Lung-Ku-Mu-Li-Tang, causes disease machanism discussion, and the treatment method and prescription discussion.ResultsChapter 1:Theoretical Study distinguish two parts,1.Provisions relating to insomnia, according to 《 Treatise of Typhoid》 six-meridian pattern identification/syndrome Differentiation,and《Synopsis of Golden Chamber》 Theory of Organs (Zangfu) and meridians (Jingluo)/syndrome Differentiation,Therapeutic analysis from the provisions of the pathogenesis,symptoms,treatment principle,herbs and the status quo of clinical use. 2.Provisions relating to depression,according to《Treatise of Typhoid》 six-meridian pattern identification/syndrome Differentiation,and《Synopsis of Golden Chamber》 Theory of Organs (Zangfu) and meridians (Jingluo)/syndrome Differentiation,Therapeutic analysis from the provisions of the pathogenesis,symptoms,treatment principle,herbs and the status quo of clinical use.Chapter 2:Prescription patterns of Chinese herbal products for patients with sleep disorder and major depressive disorder in Taiwan, Purpose:Chinese herbal products (CHPs) are commonly prescribed for sleep disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD). The aim of this study was to investigate the prescription patterns of CHPs and Western medicine for patients with these disorders in Taiwan, and analyze the frequency of using single herbs (SHs) and herbal formulas (HFs).Materials and methods:In this retrospective population-based study secondary data analysis was performed using data from Taiwan’s Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID) between January 2007 and December 2011. In total,1000,000 beneficiaries from the LHID were randomly selected from the 2010 registry for beneficiaries of the National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with sleep disorder and MDD according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision,Clinical Modification codes 307.40 and 311,respectively.Chapter 3:Chinese herbal products for insomnia and depression to make a meta-analysis of clinical studies.ConclusionIn Taiwan Database (LHID) between January 2007 and December 2011.Among a total of 11030 patients with sleep disorder,9619 used Western medicine,1334 used CHPs,and 77 used both,Among a total of 11571 patients with MDD,11389 used Western medicine,131 used CHPs, and 51 used both. Regardless of disorder type, women were predominant The majority of the patients were aged 22-44 years,had a monthly income of NT$17,281-NT$22,800, and lived in an area with Level 1 and Level 2 urbanization. Of the patients with sleep disorder,1411 had used CHPs and visited a clinic 5298 times on average. Of the patients with MDD,182 had used CHPs and visited a clinic 755 times on average. The three most commonly used SHs and HFs were Ziziphi Spinosae Semen,Polygoni Multiflori Caulis,and Polygalae Radix,and Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San, Suan-Zao-Ren-Tang,and Chai-Hu-Chia-Lung-Ku-Mu-Li-Tang,respectively. and we knowChinese herbal products including SHs and HFs are prescribed for patients with sleep disorder and MDD. However,the efficacy and safety of CHPs for sleep disorder and MDD need to be further evaluated.Based on the analysis of the database on these drugs for the treatment of sleep disorders and depression, the dose- response relationship and effect is unknown, it is necessary to in-depth assess the treatment of Chinese herbal products for insomnia and depression,this Meta-analysis showed that Suan-Zao-Ren-Tang Its Modified Prescriptions treatment of insomnia is better than Western medicine treatment of insomnia,Gan-Mai-Da-Zao-Tang Its Modified Prescriptions and Chai-Hu-Chia-Lung-Ku-Mu-Li-Tang Its modified Prescriptions treatment of depression are better than Western medicine treatment of depression,This study attempts to explore more effective medication to help patients with insomnia and depression, this study shows that Suan-Zao- Ren- Tang, Gan- Mai- Da-Zao- Tang and Chai-Hu-Chia-Lung-Ku-Mu-Li-Tang for depression and insomnia have very good effect,Use Taiwan National health Insurance Research database was further evidence the safety of Chinese herbal products, and also meets the spirit of evidence-based medicine,and hope this study will help to enhance the quality of insomnia and depression,in addition,we hope published journal to promote the internationalization of Chinese medicine.
