Objective: Through investigation and analysis of students’ perceptions forknowledge, ability and quality cultivation, this study intends to know about thesituation of applied talents cultivation of Health Service Management major and tofigure out the problems. The study also analyzes the employers’ and the society’sdemands and anticipations for personnel engaged in health service management.Based on those analyses, the study defines the knowledge, ability and quality structureof applied talents in Health Service Management major, builds the frame of thecultivation mechanism of applied talents and put forward feasible suggestions forapplied talents cultivation, in the hope of promoting the reform and innovation of higheducation teaching mode and cultivating health service management personnel whomeet the demands of the society.Methods:(1) Literature research: Literature research and analysis was adopted tocollect domestic and foreign related literature about applied talents cultivation andteaching and training of health service management personnel to summarizereferential theories and methods.(2) Questionnaire survey: Senior students and graduates in past5years of Medicineand Health Management School, TJMU, and employers in relative agencies wereselected as respondents. The internet questionnaire platform was employed toinvestigate society’s cognition degree of Health Service Management.(3) In-depth interview: Interviewed teachers and officers on the issues of teaching goal, curriculum, teaching methods and teaching guarantee system, and the status ofhealth management staff.(4) Statistical methods: Quantitative description analysis and variance analysis wereadopted to analyze the situation of applied talents cultivation and the demands ofpersonnel working in the field of health service management.Results:(1) The minimum credits of the course system in the investigateddepartment accounted for87.26%of the total, while the intensified practical trainingaccounted only for11.46%. Compared with basic courses in discipline and corecourses in specialty, the basic courses in general discipline accounted for a larger part.67.5%of the senior students thought there were little update in courses;57.5%thought teaching hours of medicine related courses were too long; only25.0%thoughtthere was a close connection between the practical training and the demands ofsociety;70.0%thought the ratio between teaching hours of practical training andcourses was inappropriate.(2) With the cultivation of university education, students mainly learned knowledge ofmanagement, medicine and computeracy. Most students developed abilities ofcommunication, organization management and document writing. Most studentsdeveloped sense of responsibility, cooperation and dedication. There were differencesbetween male and female students as well as between senior students and graduates.(3)93.37%of the surveyed employers showed their needs for health managementpersonnel.71.08%claimed their lowest academic requirement was junior college andbachelor degree. People work in the field of health service management should obtainknowledge of management, medicine and law, ability of communication, organizationmanagement and document writing, sense of enterprising, dedication and cooperation.92.77%of employers suggested universities to enhance practical training.(4) According to the result of internet survey,53.97%of the informants did not knowabout health service management major.50.79%thought directors of hospitals werenot health management majors, while51.59%thought it was nonprofessionalsengaging in health management in relative agencies and offices.84.92%of the informants thought professionals were eagerly needed in health management field andtheir demands for health management personnel of knowledge, ability and qualitywere almost same with those of employers’.Conclusion:(1) In regard to curriculum of health service management major, themedicine-related courses accounts for a large part which does not accord with thelearning needs. The teaching hours of practical training needs to be increased and bemore specific to meet the social demands. Actual working experiences enablesstudents with better understanding of what they learned in university. There is a largedemand for health service management personel and employers’ requirements forhealth management personel are almost same with those of society, while publiccognition for health service management needs to be enhanced.(2) The cultivation of health service management major should set its goal to meet thesocial demands, build curriculum system with characteristics of health managementmajor, intensify the practice teaching, regulate examine methods and promote thepublicity of health service management so as to accelerate the process ofprofessionalization of health management personnel. To cultivate applied talentswhose knowledge, ability and quality are developed coordinately for health servicemanagement accords with the needs of higher education development and that ofmedical reform. Based on those adjustments, we can also design a cultivationmechanism contains three teaching system, four cultivation period, a diversifiedexamine system, an all-round teaching guarantee system and a long-term socialcooperation system.
