| Objective: To evaluate the satisfaction and masticatory efficiency of linear occlusal complete denture in edentulous patients with severe resorption of residual ridge by within-subject comparison.Methods: Fifteen edentulous patients with severe resorption of residual ridge were treated with anatomic occlusal dentures for three months and then changed to wearing linear occlusal dentures for three months too. The satisfactions were assessed by satisfaction questionnaires after each denture was worn for one and three months respectively,and assessed masticatory efficiency after wearing for three months.Results:1. Comparative result of subjective assessment: (1)Compared with anatomic occlusal denture, comfort and stability of linear occlusal denture were significantly improved after wearing for three months (P <0.01). (2)Subjective assessment also showed not significant improvement in feature, linguistic function and mastication of two kinds of occlusal complete dentures mentioned above((P>0. 05). (3)The satisfaction degree of wearing linear occlusal dentures for three months was significantly higher than one month in stability, comfort and mastication(P <0.01).(4) Grinding times of wearing linear occlusal dentures were less than that of anatomic occlusal dentures(P <0.01).2. Comparative result of masticatory function: Linear occlusal dentures were similar in masticatory efficiency to the anatomic occlusion denture(P>0. 05),but statistically significant in increasing the masticatory strokes and times before swallowing(P <0.01, P<0. 05). Compared with anatomic occlusal dentures, masticatory cycle of linear occlusal dentures was significantly decreased(P <0.01).Conclusion: Linear occlusal complete dentures improve the performances of dentures by enhancing their stability and comfort for the edentulous patients with severe resorption of residual ridge.
