Extending the survival duration of enterprises in export markets is an important channel to maintain their export stability and improve their international competitiveness. However,in recent years,a combination of factors both inside and outside China has made the export stability of Chinese enterprises face a major threat, while digital transformation provides a new source of motivation to enhance enterprises’ competitiveness and reduce their export risks. However, theoretical and empirical studies in this area are scarce.Based on the survival analysis model, this paper empirically examines the impact of digital transformation on the duration of firms’ export products from the micro firm-product level using matched data from the 2007-2016 China Customs Import and Export Statistics Database, the text database of listed companies’ annual reports, and the Financial and Economic Database(CSMAR).Further, this study also meticulously investigates the transmission mechanism of digital transformation on the duration of firms’ export products and provides an in-depth understanding of the factual logic and path of action behind the influence mechanism. The results of this paper demonstrate that, firstly, digital transformation contributes to reducing the risk rate and extending the duration of export products of enterprises, and the results are proved to be robust and reliable after a series of robustness tests.Secondly, based on different sample regressions,it is found that there is firm size heterogeneity, firm total factor productivity heterogeneity, regional heterogeneity of enterprises and export product heterogeneity of enterprises regional heterogeneity in the effect of digital transformation on firm export product duration. Finally, the results of the mechanism analysis reveal that digital transformation reduces the risk rate of export products and prolongs the duration of export products through the mechanism of "R&D and productivity effect" measured by total factor productivity and R&D investment, and the mechanism of "signaling effect" measured by positive online reports and market diversification. The research in this paper deepens the understanding of the relationship between digital transformation and export duration and provides policy references for improving export stability and international competitiveness of enterprises and promoting high-quality development of enterprises in the new development pattern. |
