Abstract/Summary:
As the third largest economic form in the history of human development, the data elements, digital technology and digital environment in the context of its development have become the new driving force of industrial development in various countries. The level of development of a country’s digital economy can reflect the level of construction of its digital infrastructure, the level of application of digital technology and the strengths and weaknesses of its digital environment, which will have an important impact on the development of a country’s manufacturing industry. In the context of continuous economic development and digital transformation of industries, the serviceization of manufacturing industries has shown a trend of deepening, and this paper focuses on the process of gradually shifting from physical elements to service elements in intermediate inputs at home and abroad in manufacturing industries. The service level of a country’s manufacturing inputs can indirectly reflect the global competitiveness of the manufacturing industry, and it is of great practical significance to study this issue in the context of China’s future development strategy of manufacturing,i.e.from a "big manufacturing country" to a "strong manufacturing country".This paper explores the influence mechanism of the digital economy on the servitization of manufacturing inputs, and analyzes the supply side and demand side of the digital economy, proposing that the supply side is mainly driven by the application of data elements in the manufacturing industry to promote servitization inputs, the application of innovative technologies to enhance manufacturing servitization and the promulgation of digital industrial policies to promote manufacturing servitization. The transformation of manufacturing servitization and the constraint of traditional type of resources thus prompt the view of manufacturing servitization.Based on international input-output tables, the level of servitisation of manufacturing inputs in each country from 2007 to 2018 was measured using the full consumption coefficient, while the Network Readiness Index from the Global Information Technology Report released by the World Economic Forum was collated to measure the level of development of a country’s digital economy. In the status quo analysis section,it is found that developed countries are in a relatively clear lead in both the digital economy development index and the level of servitisation of manufacturing inputs. In the empirical test section,a panel fixed effects model is used to empirically examine the impact of the level of development of the digital economy on the servitisation of a country’s manufacturing sector. The study finds that the level of development of the digital economy can significantly contribute to the servitisation of a country’s manufacturing inputs, and its driving effect is more significant in the group of middle-income countries, indicating that the lower-end manufacturing industries in middle-income countries have the opportunity to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of their international competitiveness under the development of the digital economy;the part of a country’s manufacturing input servitisation that comes from foreign inputs will be more significantly The more a country’s digital economy develops, the more it will optimise its market environment and thus promote FDI.The article concludes with suggested measures that in the future,China should continue to participate in international issues of digital economy development and actively promote the development of the digital economy in terms of infrastructure, industrial policy and market environment, while China should increase service factor inputs and deepen the application of digital technology in manufacturing production, operations and pre-sales and post-sales to promote the continuous upgrading of the manufacturing industry and achieve climbing up in the global value chain.
